Things I'd know if I were a real grownup:

Are there any free clinics in the Somerville/Cambridge area? I'm applying for a job which requires a doctor's signature saying I'm healthy, and I don't have health insurance.

Also, do free clinics require some kind of proof of low income or anything similar?

Thanks very much.

I don't know if there is a free clinic in Somerville, but there is one at MGH. I couldn't find a link for them, but I've gone there before when I was uninsured. I remember paying something, but it wasn't much.

I believe there's free care at Cambridge Hospital, but you may need to qualify for it (low income).

Maybe this is too nosey, but what sort of job requires this?

Being a former HR person, I know it is illegal to ask
people about their health, other than as related to
specific duties like "Can you lift 20 pound boxes?" etc.

Never heard of a company requiring a health statement
upfront before hire...

how about sharewood (http://www.sharewood.info/)? they are in malden. i would call first - it seems they primarily deal with uninsured immigrants, but that is not their exclusive focus. since you are uninsured, i would say that qualifies as 'underserved'.

Check to see if Dr. Roy Berkowitz-Shelton is still in the Davis Sq Family Practice, near the Starbucks's patio next to the shoe repair guy. He used to have Wednesday mornings FREE HEALTH CARE. Call the office and find out what the process is. Yo may have to make an appt. Good guy. Family doctor, community focus, teaches at Tufts, did an OB/GYN stint, and ls GLBT-friendly.

He's still there. He's my PCP, but I always end up seeing Carol Dansky, because of timing issues, who I really like. I like everyone there. The sign for free/low cost health care on wednesdays is still in the window. Office phone number is 617-666-9577. Let us know what happens! (my bf is uninsured, so i'm interested).

Cambridge and Somerville have a freecare program, but it's an application process (that can be back-dated in case of a medical emergency or something) but I think it's more than what you're looking for.
