VHS to DVD Conversion

I'd like to convert 5-7 personal VHS tapes to DVD as I don't have a VCR.  I don't need any of the bells and whistles but just want to preserve the tapes.

Are there any local businesses or anyone in the Davis Square community that can do this at a reasonable price ($10/tape or less )?

thanks!

It's been a few years since I researched this, so don't trust me fully, but I think the service is unlikely to be anywhere near that cheap.

I don't remember numbers; I just remember being shocked.

Try to find someone who's majoring in film in college. My high school had the technology to do this in 2000, so it shouldn't be that rare/expensive.

Yes, or who works at an institution with a media services dept. For instance, Harvard Business School has one that performs many services for their students as well as for profs.

Check with Somerville Community Access Television or the Cambridge cable access TV station that's on Prospect St. in Central Square. I'm sure they have the tech and could (hopefully) do it cheap.

Non-local, but reasonably priced. ScanCafe does the service for $15 a tape.

I work at a TV station and could possibly do this for you (well, I could at least do the conversion from VHS to .avi files, and that's the hard part, I'd think. Never burned anything to a DVD before, though). It would probably depend on how long the tapes are - I can't hog our resources all day long. Message me if you want to talk more about this.

Thanks for the tip about ScanCafe

Getting some old-format media migrated has been high on my to-do list, but this is the first place I've found with reasonable prices. The prices I've seen were so high that it might be cheaper for me to buy a whole raft of equipment and adapters and do it myself.

Too bad they say a lot of the scanning is done in Bangalore.

For local, there's Eclipse Video on Mass Ave. (http://www.eclipsevid.com/)

$15 sounds ambitious for one-ups, but it's been awhile since I've done this. I'm interested to hear back on what you find.

This person may be exactly who you need.
