Hollywood Express in Porter Square, the only remaining video store in our area, is closing on June 30 according to their web site. The web site says, "A grand sale of all our film inventory is currently ongoing."

At their height, they were a full-fledged mini-chain with additional locations in Davis Square (where Buffalo Exchange is now), Central Square, and Twin City Plaza. They survived the demise of all their big-chain competitors such as Blockbuster, West Coast Video, and (similarly named but unrelated) Hollywood Video.

Does anyone here go back that far? Some great stuff here. Davis Square proper begins at around the 9:40 mark.

(For whatever reason, the video didn't play in Firefox for me but did in Chrome.)

I'm doing some cleaning and have some cameras I'm selling.
One is a Nikon D200 it's a DSLR. I have the original box, all cords, manuals, etc. Asking $315 with the memory card included. $390 if sold with the memory card and 50mm lens.
Barely used, great condition.

SOLD: I also have older cameras for sale including a
Casio 4.0 MP lens on it says f=8-24mm 1:2.8-4.9
Small camera fits in purse. USB cord and CD I might still have the manual.
Works great asking $25

FujiFilm Finepix 2650 2.0MP Asking $15 the camera turns on but has a message saying the lens cover is on when it isn't. So this would be a good camera if someone can fix it or for parts. Cord and CDs included.

(The only way I can personally think of this as Davis-Square-specific is that an earlier musical of mine, "Never After," played at the Somerville Theatre a few years ago. But [livejournal.com profile] ron_newman requested that I post this notice, so.)

There now exists video of a read/sing-through of my post-apocalyptic musical "Fire and Ice," performed at the Somerville public library on 2/3/13. It prefigures the blizzard and then some.

Enjoy! That is, if you enjoy darkly sardonic tragedies full of social commentary and singing.

Has anyone had old home movies (or other film) copied in digital format at a local business? Any favorites? Places to avoid?

Thanks so much.

A couple of weeks ago my car was broken into here in Davis Square and my camera and camcorder were stolen.  I don't usually leave them in the car.  I forgot that they were there and when I remembered the next day, they were gone.  Unfortunately there was a bunch of videos from my daughters first year of life that I hadn't downloaded yet.  I'm more upset about that than the cameras. I keep hoping that the memory cards might still be out there, and whoever took them, or has them now might be willing to sell them back to me.   I know it's a long shot but has anyone had any luck recovering stolen goods like this? I filed a police report and have been checking craigslist. Any tips on next steps to take?   Thanks in advance.

I'd like to convert 5-7 personal VHS tapes to DVD as I don't have a VCR.  I don't need any of the bells and whistles but just want to preserve the tapes.

Are there any local businesses or anyone in the Davis Square community that can do this at a reasonable price ($10/tape or less )?

thanks!

BostonFreeRadio.com is a three-month-old volunteer-run Internet radio station operating out of the studios of Somerville Community Access TV (SCATV) in Union Square.  BFR has a couple of events happening next week and you are welcome to take part in them.

On Monday at 8PM there is an orientation and training session for people interested in hosting a radio show on BFR.  It's at the station's studios at SCATV (90 Union Square).  Any Mass. resident is welcome to host a show -- you would have to become a member of SCATV ($40 annual membership) and BFR ($20 annual membership to cover royalty payments for music played).  Of course, the video resources of SCATV are also available to Somerville residents who become members.

Also, the station is having a launch party on Friday at Club Choices (379 Somerville Ave.).  It starts at 10PM -- there'll be giveaways, there'll be lots of staff there, and station DJs will be spinning tunes.  There is a $10 cover, but if you're a BFR member (see above) you and a guest can get in for free!

For more info, call 617-628-8826, email manager@bostonfreeradio.com, or go to http://www.bostonfreeradio.com

[Full disclosure: I am a volunteer at BFR and currently serve as Program Director]

Maybe I'm the last to see this since it has apparently been on Youtube since last fall. But I looked and didn't see it here under the video or pest control tags. Just posting because it couldn't be cuter. (If it's a repeat, I'll delete)

For those who missed the September episode, I just got this in an email message from WCVB's Chronicle:

Monday December 6th at 7:30 pm, we will be repeating Chronicle's "Somerville" episode from September.

This is a bit of an oddity and it's closer to Porter than Davis, but I thought you might kind of enjoy anyway. It's a new National Park in Somerville.

The City of Somerville is pulling out all the stops in its courtship of Google, sending a homemade video to the company last week as part of its bid to become a pilot community for Google's new high-speed broadband network.

The video, narrated by the former “Voice of Somerville” Tom Champion, describes a “historic, sophisticated, and richly diverse” city with a penchant for new technology. Comic relief is provided by local celebrities Jimmy Tingle and Jimmy Del Ponte, who appears atop Prospect Hill dressed as “Lady Google.” At the close of the video, 100 Somerville high school athletes dressed head-to-toe in Google colors spell out the firm's name on Dilboy Field.

The election is coming up next week and I don't really know anything about the candidates. Mark Niedergang stopped by my house a couple of weeks ago and I liked his ideas enough to want to vote for him. Any thoughts on the other people who are running? Any relevant issues people differ on? Any good website recommendations to find out more?

Thanks!

If you were there, and remember which bands you saw, take a look and let me know if you're in any of these videos. [livejournal.com profile] kdsorceress is pretty obvious at the beginning of one of them, but other than that I'm not sure who else from [livejournal.com profile] davis_square is in these.

Sorry for the poor sound quality, especially on loud percussion. My camera's mic isn't that good.

For years, I've had this magnet on my refrigerator:

Davis Square: The First Indie Sitcom - www.DavisSquareSit.com )

I have no idea how old it is, and I don't know anything about the TV show that it advertised. I'm guessing it ran on SCAT but I don't recall ever watching it. The website on the magnet, DavisSquareSit.com, no longer exists.

If anyone here remembers this, or acted in it, or helped produce it, or has a tape of it, or knows anything at all about it, please post a reply here. Thanks.

Sad. Just sad. And greedy. According to an employee the rent situation is "out of control" therefore Hollywood Express is merging the Davis Sq. stock into their Porter Sq. store. The Davis location will be closed as of July 27. If you have an account and go in before the closing day, you can get a coupon for 10 free rentals to be used by (I believe) September at the Porter location only. Yet another local store pushed out.
