Hoping to go to the 2001 screening at Somerville Theater tonight. Does anybody know if the parking lot adjacent to the theater, next to the health center, is still available for parking? I haven't had to park anywhere in the Square in years. A friend wants to drive and we'll need to find something. Thanks.

Hello Davis Square-ians,

On Monday August 3rd the Boston Zine Fest is presenting a special, one-time screening of Filmage: the story of Descendents/ALL at the Somerville Theatre.  The showing is at 7:30pm, tickets are only $10, and are available day of, or in advance online HERE.  This showing is a fundraiser for the Boston Zine Fest, which is happening at Make Shift Boston and Simmons College in October.

The film is a documentary about the seminal punk bands Descendents and ALL, which share the same members except the vocalists.  Even if you aren't a fan of either band, or even punk in general, the film is a really well made documentary about the trials and tribulations about bands that record and tour as their full time jobs.  Hopefully you'll join us for this special screening to benefit a good community cause!

Thanks!
Liz for Boston Zine Fest

P.S. you can view the trailer for the film HERE

from the theatre's Facebook page:
As has been widely reported in the media, Sony Pictures is now making 'THE INTERVIEW' available to theaters; we will be playing it starting Friday January 2. We are unable to screen it before that date, as the last-minute nature of this availability meant that we had already committed to other movies for the week of December 25 - January 1. Tickets and showtimes will be available starting next Monday evening.

The Somerville had originally been scheduled to open this movie on Christmas Day, before Sony pulled it from release.

5Point Film Festival Celebrates Local

SOMERVILLE, MA (October 28, 2014) – Local art, business, athletes, filmmakers, storytellers, and musicians make a community vibrant and diverse, and the 5Point Film Festival is focusing on celebrating this local flavor at their upcoming Festival November 5 + 6 in Somerville.

“The Somerville and Boston areas are rich with a diverse community of artists, businesses and non-profits.” Said Sarah Wood, Executive Director of 5Point Film. “We are celebrating and showcasing this vibrant part of the community at our event and expect to grow this aspect of the event each year.”

Featured local artists include filmmaker Stebs Schinnerer, visual artist Chris DeLorenzo, DJ Gucci Vuitton, and local non-profit Bikes Not Bombs.

About Chris DeLorenzo
Chris DeLorenzo is a graphic artist and illustrator working out of Boston, Massachusetts. By day he is the lead designer for Johnny Cupcakes, and by night he lends his hand and ideas illustrating for global brands of all kinds. He has the pleasure of doing work for Jameson, Lincoln Motor Company, Kiehl’s cosmetics, Espolon Tequila, Sony and more. See more at http://chrisdelorenzo.com/

About Gucci Vuitton
Gucci Vuitton is a veteran DJ of the Boston scene as well as founder of Bodega and Fourth Wall Project. His diverse sets have been earned him bookings from Boston to Japan and parts in between playing alongside acts like Clipse, Andrew W.K. and Soul Clap. Equally at home in an art gallery or renegade loft party, Gucci Vuitton’s perverse amount of funky records continues keep heads ringing.

About Stebs Schinnerer
Stebs is a filmmaker who focuses on filming beautiful, informative and inspiring films. His goal is to meet and work with as many people as possible, and to create a body of work that does not just reflect one person, place or thing, but encompasses as many sides of life as possible. As an artist collaborating with friends, family, editors, motion graphic artists, creative agencies and generally awesome people, Stebs never feels alone in his journeys. He loves getting to know people and the stories they have to tell – and he loves sharing them with the world. See more at http://paperfortressfilms.com/

About Bikes Not Bombs
Bikes Not Bombs has been collecting used bicycles in the Greater Boston area for 30 years. These bikes are then sent to international partners in the Global South, or used in local youth programs for skill development, jobs and sustainable transportation. Each year Bikes Not Bombs sends about 3,500 bikes overseas to partners who are using bicycles to drive social change in their communities. Proceeds from the BNB Bike Shop in Jamaica Plain supports Bikes Not Bombs' Youth and International work, and offer free clinics each month.

Quick reminder that we are having a Giant Moving Sale today from 9:30 to 3:00 p.m. at the corner of College Avenue and Chapel.  Lots of great items that we cannot take with us.

Of particular interest to this neighborhood, we have just decided to sell two orginal theater chairs from the Somerville Theater that we got a few years ago and mounted on stained wood.  We love these chairs and love having this piece of local history, but we simply have no room to use them in our new place.  Rather than send them to storage we thought we would try to find them a new home (photo below).

Thanks!
Melissa and Kristin

The Somerville Theatre turns 100 years old on Sunday, May 11.

For the 100 days leading up to that birthday, starting this Friday, the theatre will present a wide variety of classic films, film festivals, and live shows. The theatre's manager Ian Judge ([livejournal.com profile] svilletheatre) has kindly sent me a textual list of the movies, which I have included below. All movies will be shown in real 35mm film on the big screen in Theatre 1.

Admission to all movies is $10 -- single admission to all double and triple features.   A 'Centennial Pass' to all of the movies is $300, but you'd have to go to almost every film to make that worthwhile.   (This admission policy does not apply to the Sci-Fi Marathon, Banff Mountain Film Festival, Irish Film Festival, or Independent Film Festival.)

Fri JAN 31st: “Queen of the Movies“ a selection of Mary Pickford films @8pm.
Sat FEB 1st:.D.W. Griffith’s “WAY DOWN EAST” @8pm w/Jeff Rapsis providing live accompaniment.
Sun FEB 2nd: Clara Bow in “WINGS” @ 1pm w/Jeff Rapsis providing live accompaniment.

Most of the schedule is behind this cut )

Wed MAY 7th: double feature:  Clint Eastwood’s “UNFORGIVEN” @7:30pm;  John Sayles’ “LONE STAR” @10pm.
Fri MAY 9th: triple feature:  “GIMME SHELTER” @6pm;  “THE LAST WALTZ” @8pm;  “STOP MAKING SENSE” @10pm.
Sat MAY 10th: double feature:  “THE DARK KNIGHT” @3pm & 9pm;  “THE DEPARTED” @6pm.
Sun MAY 11th: “THE WIZARD OF OZ” presented with live vaudeville acts and special short subjects.   6 pm

Theatre@First is proud to present

The Bully Plays
an anthology of short works
edited by Linda Habjan
directed by Jeanné Callinan

October 23rd & 24th at 7pm
The Somerville Theatre
55 Davis Square, Somerville

For tickets and more info, visit http://www.theatreatfirst.org

Half of proceeds to benefit The Center for Teen Empowerment <http://teenempowerment.org> and support their anti-bullying work in our communities.

In ten short pieces, Callinan’s talented cast explores bullying from many different perspectives including the victims, the bystanders, the families, and the bullies themselves. From classrooms to living rooms, from crowded hallways to the isolation of social media, The Bully Plays illustrates many facets of bullying, and the insidious ways it creeps into our lives. It’s a serious—even life-threatening—subject, but The Bully Plays balances the tragic, the humorous, and the heart-warming as it illuminates ways that we can all break the patterns of bullying and let everyone know that no one is alone.

Join us for Q&A with the cast and director after each performance. Licensed counselors will be available for anyone who needs to talk during or after the show.

And check out the Anti-Bullying PSA filmed by the cast & crew of the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DUxX_T7IjU8

As the 2nd in my continuing series documenting art theft in the Greater Davis Square area, I bring you today a heartbreaking theft from the Museum of Bad Art.

From their Facebook page:

ANOTHER THEFT AT MOBA!

This piece has been stolen from the MOBA gallery in the Somerville Theatre. It was on display for informational purposes only, as we do not include paintings on velvet in the collection. This is the second theft this year; it's getting annoying. If you are the selfish lout who took it, or have information about the piece's whereabouts, please contact: curator@museumofbadart.org.
