Hollywood Express in Porter Square, the only remaining video store in our area, is closing on June 30 according to their web site. The web site says, "A grand sale of all our film inventory is currently ongoing."

At their height, they were a full-fledged mini-chain with additional locations in Davis Square (where Buffalo Exchange is now), Central Square, and Twin City Plaza. They survived the demise of all their big-chain competitors such as Blockbuster, West Coast Video, and (similarly named but unrelated) Hollywood Video.

That's sad, but not surprising. I always liked the place, but haven't rented from them in years.

I enjoyed them back in the day. They always had a nice selection of art house films. But time marches on. I watch just about all my movies on Amazon Instant now.

When I lived in Inman, I went to their Central Sq. location often and rented so many Criterion Collection/foreign language films from them. And the staff was always so nice and knowledgeable. It's a shame to see them finally kick the bucket, but as you said, time marches on and streaming rules the world.

Stopped going when I was disabled

A couple of years ago I went to Hollywood Video regularly. When I was preparing for a knee replacement I asked if they had a handicapped entrance, which they don't. It was many, many months before I was able to negotiate stairs and in the meantime I started streaming. Who knows, if they had had a handicapped entrance I might be still renting from them. Good people working there, especially the folks who used to work in the Davis Square site.

Dang! I had better use up my prepaid coupon book that I think I bought in 2007.

As recently as 3 weeks ago, their website said they were planning to stay in business for a long time, but they were looking to find another business to sublet some space. http://web.archive.org/web/20150506095039/http://www.hollywoodexpressvideo.com/

It's a shame they couldn't stay open.
