Devastated to learn that the young cyclist hit in Inman Square yesterday died of her injuries. Heard on NPR that she worked at Diesel. The Cafe's FB page says they closed early today to mourn their friend. So incredibly sad.

Tonight at 7pm, drop by Diesel for an artist reception.
Archetype, a pattern of growth

I'm posting for my good friend Ellie Laramee-Byers, whose show tonight is her first solo show!

Enjoy her work all month, but drop in tonight to congratulate her.

Saw this in the Medford Patch this morning:
http://medford.patch.com/groups/business-news/p/davis-square-coffee-shop-named-one-of-americas-best-medford

It's a Facebook-votes award, but still kinda cool. The article also mentions that the owners have another location and will soon be opening a third.

About 20 minutes ago, I walked by Diesel Cafe and saw 12 bicycles all locked together with a single cable, all with flat tires. They are not in the city's bike corral, but rather just beyond the corral as you walk from Diesel towards Rosebud.

Any idea why these bikes are here? I don't think the ABC Family production crew are responsible for this, as they've all packed up and left for the evening.

ETA 11/29/12 11:40 am: According to the counter staff at Diesel this morning, this was a prop for the TV show, and it was taken away within the last hour.

An e-mail I got today:

Hello, this is Jackie Rossetti from the City of Somerville with important information for the Davis Square area. On Wednesday, November 28th a film production company will be filming scenes for an upcoming TV show* at indoor locations in Davis Square between the hours of 6am and 9pm. To accommodate this event and for public safety reasons, parking restrictions may apply in some areas of Davis Square and in surrounding lots, including Day Street and Grove Street. Additionally, the vehicle travel lane will be restricted at the left turn lane from Highland Ave. onto Elm Street. Somerville Police officers will be stationed in this area to assist with any temporary detours. To reduce impacts on businesses, customers and residents, Resident Permit Parking in this immediate area will be relaxed during posted “No Parking” hours.

If you have questions or concerns on Wednesday, please contact Assistant Location Manager Ryan Cook at 617-763-7758.

* I asked Jackie Rossetti what the TV show is, and she replied: It’s an ABC Family pilot called “Terminales”.

(I wonder if this is why Diesel Cafe will close at 5 pm Tuesday and be closed all day Wednesday?)

ETA: added link to Mass. Film Office press release about Terminales

Ollie is a brown and white Boston terrier belonging to the wonderful Jess, whom many of you will know as manager of Diesel Cafe. Ollie went missing late this morning, October 5th, in the Fells (North Fells by Marjam in Stoneham).

Please call Jess at 978-387-9886 or Kate at 617-650-4061 with any information. Flyer with a photo and more details is here.

Would appreciate the signal boost. Thanks.

Found indeed, safe and sound. Thanks!

If you left, or stopped watching, the [livejournal.com profile] diesel_cafe community because it was being overrun by Russian spam, you can return to it now.

I sent a support request to the LJ Abuse Team about the community having an absent or inattentive maintainer, and LJ responded by appointing me as the new owner of that community. I changed the community settings to require people to be members of the community before they can make new posts there (as in [livejournal.com profile] davis_square).

I don't especially need to co-maintain another LJ community ([livejournal.com profile] davis_square is quite enough), so I'd be happy to turn it over to any Diesel employee or regular patron who can bring the community back to life. Before my recent abuse complaints, there hadn't been a new post there since May, 2009. Any takers?

So, I lost a brown satchel. Left it at Diesel Friday morning, came back, and nobody had turned it in. Bad me, no cookie.

There were plenty of things in there that would be valuable to people other than myself - like cash and an iPad. There was one thing in there that would be of no value to anyone but is extremely valuable to me and a real bear to replace, namely my (foreign) passport. So if anyone finds a discarded brown satchel (a tattered Kipling), or a discarded Latvian passport, or something along those lines, please, please pick it up and call me. 857-204-8727. I will be forever in your debt.

Yes, I have made a police report.

The city has put signs around the bike corral in front of Diesel Cafe, saying that it will be removed tomorrow. I assume the same is true for the corral in front of Bloc 11, but I didn't go by there today.

If your bike is attached to either of these racks, you should move it somewhere else tonight.

The corrals will return next spring.

A short while ago (about an hour), my wife's back pack was stolen at the Diesel.  Among other things it contained a 13" MacBook Pro (early 2011).  The serial number is C02FTC2DDH2H, so if anyone tries to sell you a machine with this serial number please respond to this post.  The serial number is physically printed on the bottom part of the laptop.  It can be also found by clicking on the apple icon on the top left side of the screen, choosing "About this Mac" and then clicking on the "More Info" button.

So Diesel no longer toasts bagels anymore :( and I'm just not crazy about untoasted bagels for some reason. Is there another place in the square (besides Dunkin Donuts) to get a bagel fix first thing in the morning?

Hi there!

I'm a student working on a project about baristas, indie coffeehouses and their relationships to the communities around them. So, I'd love to talk with baristas or staff at Diesel or Bloc 11 in Somerville who are willing to share their experiences over lunch or a hot beverage (I'm buying). I'm interested in stories or reflections about working and the connections to the area.

Email me at nameofdog AT yahoo.com if you're interested.

It’s a slow, tiresome Monday, so as I approach my 9th year as a Davis Square resident I have some confessions. These are "confessions" because these things make me feel like the bitch I am! My list goes to 11.

Do you have any confessions? Perhaps later in the week I’ll feel perky and refreshed and post my top 11 loves -though it will be hard to think of only 11.

1. I’ve been secretly rooting for Kick Ass Cupcakes to fail, and I’m boggled that they still survive.
2. While I like McIntyre and Moore in theory, I never use them and won’t miss them.
3. I hate Mike’s, its terrible – even with the cheap beer, I don't get the popularity of this institution - I liked it better when they were crappier inside with the old signs.
4. Chipotle has won my burrito bowl dollars, I never would have seen that coming Anna’s! Anna Anna, please forgive me!
5. While I love Deisel, I’m going less and less now that the same 5 crazy people rotate ownership of the good chairs/couches and NEVER leave.
6. I don’t miss Someday Cafe, I liked it in theory, but it was a dirty filth hole.
7. I don’t miss the junkies in front of share group on Dover St (not that all of them were junkies), but I do miss the times they would interact with the Mormons.
8. I really don’t want to see Sacco’s close, but yet I never give them any business, and I was opposed to the Community Connections Center for no other reason than I thought it was a dumb name.
9. As fiercly opposed as I was to CVS opening, I now shop there all the time.
10. I want all bars except Joshua Tree to get a 2am permit!
11. Even though it’s a lame joke I still find it funny that Store 24 is not open 24 hours, and that Bread and Butter Konvience is, but has  a weird name.

Meghan,

I just ran in to you earlier today (Sunday, Mar 30) at Diesel Cafe. Sorry I didn't get a chance to chat more. I'd like to remedy that.

Like the subject line says... Goffee (goth meetup) tonight at Diesel Cafe in Davis Sq, Somerville at 8pm!

Look for the gal dressed in black with the REALLY long red hair in back by the couches.

Good food, good drinks, and people getting together to chat, relax, and hang out before TGIF tomorrow. :)
