A short while ago (about an hour), my wife's back pack was stolen at the Diesel.  Among other things it contained a 13" MacBook Pro (early 2011).  The serial number is C02FTC2DDH2H, so if anyone tries to sell you a machine with this serial number please respond to this post.  The serial number is physically printed on the bottom part of the laptop.  It can be also found by clicking on the apple icon on the top left side of the screen, choosing "About this Mac" and then clicking on the "More Info" button.

Sorry for the loss, I hope you get it back.

You might want to contact Apple (I'd suggest a local store over the main support line, but YMMV) to see if they can provide you with the MAC address from your serial number. This information might help you later on.

I'd also suggest watching local craigslist listings for new 13" MBPs going on sale, though maybe everyone already knows that by now.

I'm always wondering what is a unsafe time period or distance to be away from my backpack in Diesel. What happened in her case?

Yeah, I'm wondering that, too. I never leave my computer/bag unattended in a restaurant or coffee shop, but sometimes I ask an honest looking nearby neighbor to watch it.

P.S. I'm so sorry to hear this! How horrible.

Wasn't in Davis, but downtown, in my old coffee shop, I had people's bags stolen literally right behind them(laptop bag propped behind their chair, or hanging behind them). Don't leave your stuff out of sight at all if there is something of value in it.
Thieves are really clever, swift fuckers sometimes.

I always stick my leg or arm through a strap on my bag if I've set it down near me, whether I'm at a cafe or on the T.

This happened to me too, at the Panera Bread near Northeastern a couple of weeks ago. I set my bag by my feet, and someone very literally snuck up behind me and spirited it away, right in the middle of the early-afternoon cafe crowd. You just can't be too careful.

Please report the theft to the police, if you have not already done so; every little piece of data helps.

And this is probably too late to be helpful this time, but worth noting: I ended up getting my laptop back because of backup software installed on it. When the thief wiped my account and made a new one, I was able to browse through all the files subsequently created, and update the police. Full story here. (http://prog.livejournal.com/983354.html)

Perhaps they could set up a camera and keep the videos for a couple of days for situations like these.
