This happened to me too, at the Panera Bread near Northeastern a couple of weeks ago. I set my bag by my feet, and someone very literally snuck up behind me and spirited it away, right in the middle of the early-afternoon cafe crowd. You just can't be too careful.
Please report the theft to the police, if you have not already done so; every little piece of data helps.
And this is probably too late to be helpful this time, but worth noting: I ended up getting my laptop back because of backup software installed on it.
