The Painted Burro is now open

The Painted Burro is now open in the space formerly occupied by Gargoyles. When I walked by, they told me that they had opened yesterday.

In other paint news, I saw a bunch of folks painting walls in the former Namaskar restaurant today. Why, I don't know. Most of the fixtures are still there, so I hope this means another restaurant will arrive soon.

We went for the soft opening and the food is DELICIOUS.

Any recommendations?

We had guacamole and ceviche to start and both were ridiculously good. We suggested they add more chips with the guac, and I assume they will.

I had fish tacos, my fiance had steak tacos and both were fantastic. Our friend had the ribs, which were super tender, but I don't like mole so I can't vouch for his recommendation. His gf had the lamb and peach tacos, which she thought were great too, but again, I have issues with sweet/savory combos so didn't taste them.

The cola drink was outstanding, as was the pina colada, though that's more dessert than a dinner drink. Overall really, really great. We're probably going back tonight. :)

That's funny, I went last night and really enjoyed the guacamole and ceviche.

Sadly though, I didn't enjoy much else. I sampled three different tacos, and all were a bit dry and bland. The one single dessert they offered was decent but uninspiring. My favorite part of the street cart chicken was the kale, and there was remarkably little of it.

Also the bench seating at my table was noticeably lower than the table and the chairs on the other side, leaving us feeling like our friends were towering over us. I heard patrons on either side of us comment about the same thing.

I like the food at Masa and Tu Y Yo better.

I went on Thursday: I got the rabbit, which was very good. I highly recommend the margaritas - I tried both the hibiscus margarita and the house margarita, both of which were excellent.

I was really disappointed in both the quality of the food and the management.

Shrimp tacos were served raw, leaving one diner feeling a bit ill. When returned to the kitchen, and replaced with the vegetarian option, a chunk of shrimp was found in the vegetarian taco! It is kinda early for a new restaurant to have a vindictive kitchen staff. Moreover, the manager was a bit argumentative over the whole debacle.

Sad to say, I won't return.

Oh, and just learned this from yelp - despite what our server told us:

"4a. Vegetarians, beware. The only completely 100% veggie options on the menu are the Mizuna + Red Oak Salad and the Enchiladas. Everything else that seems vegetarian is actually cooked with chicken stock. I'm always a little taken aback when I find a restaurant in Somerville or Cambridge with few to no veggie options. Are you kidding? Do you know where your restaurant is located?"
