kickass cupcakes closed?

I was just told thirdhand (someone saw it happening, told their friend, who told me because we'd been discussing it a few weeks ago) that Kickass Cupcakes has closed (the someone who saw it happening saw things being moved out of the new location into trucks).

Their facebook page is definitely gone.

Anyone down near their 'new' location who can maybe ascertain this?

It has not been open the past few times I have gone by in the middle of the day, but I have not stopped to check.

Right now the sign says closed for vacation.

Their cupcakes were always dense and overrated. I will personally not miss them.
Having said that, my company places a huge order from them every month to celebrate employees' birthdays.
It looks like this has ceased this summer.

Yeah, I found their cupcakes to be good, but not "kickass".

Strange that they would remove their Facebook page, but leave their web site and Twitter page up.

Boston Restaurant Talk says it's closed .... but I think their source is the same as yours.

Their most recent review on Yelp dated 8/4 is from someone who apparently placed a cupcake order for a wedding. They went to pickup the prepaid order to find the store "closed for vacation" and stated that the voicemail box for the store is full when they called. http://www.yelp.com/biz/kickass-cupcakes-somerville. This does not sound very good for the business, closed for renovations or vacation often means closed for good in restaurant lingo it seems. Either it is closed or it is just not being run very well at all. Perhaps the recent move to the new space was driven by trying to cut costs, by reducing the rent payments (just a speculation on my part though).

I can't say I was ever much of a fan of their cupcakes and I think the whole cupcake fad in general is finally running out of gas, being over taken by donuts and cronuts it seems as the next big sweet baked thing trend. That being said I was really put off by some of the comments towards customers coming from the owner of this establishment, just a classic example of how not to respond to criticism of your business. Based on that attitude alone I decided never to buy anything else from them again.

I think you are spot on, here.

[identity profile] mamajoan.livejournal.com 2014-08-06 08:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you about the cupcake fad in general and Kickass Cupcakes specifically. I always felt they were highly overrated and way overpriced.

I was just reading the Yelp reviews too, as you apparently were -- I really feel for the couple with the wedding. What a huge headache, that I'm sure they so don't need.

Anyway, all the writing on the wall seems to point to Kickass being gonzo.

[identity profile] surrealestate.livejournal.com 2014-08-06 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh, that sucks for the couple! At least it was a pretty small order, so I bet they could have walked into Lindell's, Qdabra, or some combination and walked out with enough for less than what they'd already paid.

[Checking that reviewer's reviews, looks like they got cupcakes from Whole Foods same day. Glad it worked out for them anyway.]

[personal profile] ron_newman 2014-08-06 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
What and where is Qdabra? Google thinks that's a software company, not a baker.

ETA - oh did you mean Quebrada in East Arlington?

Er... yes. :]

When they moved, they'd apparently commented to some customers that they were focusing more on catering and their food trucks, which if that's the bulk of their business, makes sense.

I will say that the one time I encountered a Kickass Cupcakes food truck, it was with a group of other local trucks (Mei Mei, Pennypackers, etc). The other trucks had folks out front smiling and welcoming people, taking orders, pointing out specials on big pricing boards. Kickass had a tiny window in their truck with a scowling woman peering out, a tiny chalkboard with no prices on it next to the window. They weren't doing much business at all.

I won't mourn the cupcakes, but I do miss the Dairy Bar.

[identity profile] chenoameg.livejournal.com 2014-08-07 12:24 pm (UTC)(link)
So much this. I'm tempted to try to see if I can get Richardson's to do a bulk milk delivery to my house that I could then share out.

[identity profile] surrealestate.livejournal.com 2014-08-07 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Folks here get a bulk milk delivery Crescent Ridge. I bet you could do that, or worst case, add to the order here and pick up.

Richardson's milk disagrees with me, most likely because they use antibiotics. I liked that the Dairy Bar carried Shaw Farm milk (even if it's a lot more spendy than Garelick Farms, which I can also drink). Plus they had eggs and bacon and were next door to When Pigs Fly for all your French Toast needs.

Which had been largely devoid of dairy for the past few weeks, from what I was told. Probably, in retrospect, a sign.

i admit i kind of liked some of their cupcakes, but mostly i'll miss the ability to buy just a little cup of frosting. that was always my favorite thing about the place.

[identity profile] masslibrulgirl.livejournal.com 2014-08-20 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
Sweet (in Harvard Square, the Back Bay, Newbury St, and Downtown Crossing) also has frosting shots! And I think their cupcakes are better than Kickass' ever were anyway.

Their facebook page is definitely gone.

I rather liked their mojito cupcake. I'm sorry to hear it.

Too Frickin expensive. $4 for a cupcake and you will barely have enough left to spend at the thrift shop.

[identity profile] teko.livejournal.com 2014-08-07 01:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Did anyone ever actually eat their mythical "deep fried, icing-filled cupcake"? Before they opened, their website featured it, and it sounded amazing. But every single time I went there, I'd ask, and either their deep fryer was broken, it was the 'wrong day', or they just hadn't made any. I'm not convinced that they actually existed.

[identity profile] steeks99.livejournal.com 2014-08-07 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it was only available at night, and only at the end of the week (Thursday through Saturday)? Pretty tasty if you got it with ice cream, but I would probably say that about any brand of deep fried cupcake.

[identity profile] oneagain.livejournal.com 2014-08-07 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Not being one who frequents cupcake stores, I've never heard of deep-fried, icing filled cupcakes. Is this a thing? Or was this unique to the store? If it's a thing, I'd love to know where I could get me one of those...

:D

(I briefly thought of you and [livejournal.com profile] hammercock yesterday at the farmer's market in Davis Square because I saw pumpkin blossoms and remembered the picks of when you stuffed and then deep-fried them.)

I ate it once, but it was years ago. I remember thinking it was pretty good, but not super-exciting.
