It doesn't sound like blasting, and I'm pretty sure they're not doing any blasting on that project, especially right now when they're just rerouting utilities. Sounds more like a firework or a really loud backfire.
I've heard it too (I'm in Medford, just east of Ball Square), and have been assuming it's dumbasses with fireworks. Still, I'd also expect there to be more than one boom at a time if that were the case, and I've only heard one a night so far.
Long ago when I lived in a basement studio on Mass Ave between Porter and Harvard during the Red Line extension construction, every weeknight just before 11pm the construction crew would set off one final blast in the tunnel work. I assumed it was because they had an 11pm curfew, and that they were probably also doing it at other times but I wasn't home to notice. Perhaps this is a similar thing.
