Sycamore Street Bridge

... is almost open -- they were laying asphalt this morning.

In fact, because I had to move my car so that the road-construction equipment could get into position, I got to drive over it because it was the only practical way to get out. So I may have been the first "unofficial" vehicle over it. :-)

I don't know if they're going to have a ribbon-cutting ceremony or anything -- I expect I'll just come home one of these days and there won't be any barriers up. (You can already walk across it as of Friday.)

jeez. how long did it take? Why do these bridges have to take so many years to repair!? I continue to be annoyed about the Walden Street bridge... estimated time of completion: Fall 2008!

Now hopefully they won't have to replace it again when the Green Line gets extended. The designs for it and the Lowell Street Bridge did not account for the possible need to fit two more tracks under them, which given that the Green Line Extension has been proposed for ages, is every bit as mindblowingly stupid as you think it is. (Fortunately, the Lowell Street Bridge can apparently be modified to accommodate the Green Line without having to rebuild it.

I doubt this will be an occasion for politicians and ribbon-cutting, given that it's only been closed for a year or so, and it's a small one-way residential street.

Do keep in mind that the Lowell St. bridge was open to foot traffic for, iirc, at least a year before it was open to vehicular traffic. That's pretty cool that you got to drive over it, though.

One thing that delayed the Lowell Street bridge project was everyone's insistence that it be open to pedestrians and bicyclists at all times during construction. This meant building a small temporary bridge for pedestrians before demolishing and rebuilding the real bridge.

The Walden Street bridge project in Cambridge has the same constraint.

It looks complete, I have no idea why it isn't open, yet. They'd better not do something ridiculous like wait until January 1st to declare it officially open.

I have the dubious honor of living in the very last house, teetering on the edge of what used to be a gaping chasma and is now a shiny new bridge. I'll be glad when they aren't jackhammering at 6:30am, anymore.
