Top 11Davis Square Confessions

It’s a slow, tiresome Monday, so as I approach my 9th year as a Davis Square resident I have some confessions. These are "confessions" because these things make me feel like the bitch I am! My list goes to 11.

Do you have any confessions? Perhaps later in the week I’ll feel perky and refreshed and post my top 11 loves -though it will be hard to think of only 11.

1. I’ve been secretly rooting for Kick Ass Cupcakes to fail, and I’m boggled that they still survive.
2. While I like McIntyre and Moore in theory, I never use them and won’t miss them.
3. I hate Mike’s, its terrible – even with the cheap beer, I don't get the popularity of this institution - I liked it better when they were crappier inside with the old signs.
4. Chipotle has won my burrito bowl dollars, I never would have seen that coming Anna’s! Anna Anna, please forgive me!
5. While I love Deisel, I’m going less and less now that the same 5 crazy people rotate ownership of the good chairs/couches and NEVER leave.
6. I don’t miss Someday Cafe, I liked it in theory, but it was a dirty filth hole.
7. I don’t miss the junkies in front of share group on Dover St (not that all of them were junkies), but I do miss the times they would interact with the Mormons.
8. I really don’t want to see Sacco’s close, but yet I never give them any business, and I was opposed to the Community Connections Center for no other reason than I thought it was a dumb name.
9. As fiercly opposed as I was to CVS opening, I now shop there all the time.
10. I want all bars except Joshua Tree to get a 2am permit!
11. Even though it’s a lame joke I still find it funny that Store 24 is not open 24 hours, and that Bread and Butter Konvience is, but has  a weird name.

I wish ANY PD's would enforce the fucking laws.

I ride my bike from somerville to northeastern in late spring and early summer, and i always follow the laws like a car.

Not doing so just makes drivers think you don't give a fuck about traffic laws, so why should they?

I thanked someone I saw stop at the light at willow and summer, on his bike, for following the law.

Okay, now you sound like my old CEO who, when the engineers complained about how little money we were getting in a buy-out, tried to gain sympathy by noting how huge his tax burden was going to be.

It doesn't work. Quit while you're ahead -- your first reply was spot on. :)

I am bitter. Quit rubbing my face in it. http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/1198311.html?thread=12346855#t12346855

Somebody's clearly not a Bob Newhart fan.

Wow

You read my mind completely on all of those things except #10. Although I do agree the Joshua Tree should NOT get a 2am permit, I also think the Sligo should be put on that list! I understand that students, young people think it's cool to hang in this dive because it's raw and whatnot but I hate walking by midday and seeing the alcoholics anonymous stumbling in or out. It's a little too rough around the edges and I think a new bar should go in there to get rid of the riff raff. It would be cool if something like Shay's, Delux or the River Gods was in Davis.

Now if only the Social Security building was converted into something cool then we would be all set!

CD Spins does suck...

How are they even in business? I say turn that place into a vinyl record store like Stereo Jack's on Mass Ave or a cool bookshop or something!

it's a schlep, but herrells in allston and fiores in jp have quite fine vegan cupcakes; herrells in particular are about the same price as kickass cupcakes, but twice the size. and tj's, also in allston, has lots of vegan baked goods other than cupcakes

I'm with you on the Sewing and Vacuum Center, where I generally buy a couple of spools of thread and a zipper. HOW DO THEY DO IT?

Still, Mr. Crap doesn't get a cent of my money, even though it's more a memorial gesture than anything

So you're penalizing Mr. Crepe because Gus Toscanini was too lame or broke to renew his lease?

Honey, according to the Sligo's clientele, YOU'RE the riff raff.

Sligo

Yeah that bar belongs in Malden or Revere...

And probably according to Social Security's clientele, too ....

Yes, I remember the official story. More accurate details can be found here, (http://groups.google.com/group/somedaycommunity/msg/0d3d0511950e4a16) with the bit about Creyf and Fraiman doing a deal to take advantage of Rancatore's fabled flakiness left out. I realize that that's standard operating procedure these days, but it's not something I personally choose to be a part of unless I absolutely can't avoid it.

I'm a little baffled by that. They sold out every day -- are stroopwaffels a "winter thing"? I'd munch them all summer long.

#7: I've been in the Diva Lounge a few times, and the place baffles me, and seemingly baffles the servers who work there, too. Last time I went they sat me and my friends at this tiny little knee-high table barely large enough for our drinks -- which at $10-$12 apiece were wildly overpriced, considering that some of our exotically-named cocktails were literally 'vodka with a sprig of cinnamon in it' or some such.

The servers were very confused as to what the menu actually was; they handed us a 'tapas' menu but said we couldn't order from it, but then changed their minds. We tried ordering from the main Diva menu, but then they said we couldn't. We eventually gave up, walked into Diva proper, and had an okay meal.

Yeah, Diva Lounge is a fucked up place.

Those activists are actively harming the business in Davis Square, I believe. They make living in and walking through the Square an unfriendly place to be with their strong-arm guilt tactics. If local businesses are wondering about their lunch business, I'd point to the asshole from Greenpeace who yells at you behind your back if you don't sign his damn petition. He and his crowd are public nuisances.

Rosebud is such a hole. Of all the places in the Square, I'm most baffled by their constant business -- they're successful enough to expand into La Spina's space, even! Bizarre. Overpriced, very terrible food served by creepy physically abused waitresses. No thanks!

[identity profile] zmook.livejournal.com 2008-04-16 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't get you.

(But if they'd sell me something for half the price with no frosting, I'd be there all the time.)

[identity profile] surrealestate.livejournal.com 2008-04-16 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
2) I like Diva Lounge. I don't know why... Maybe because it's the complete opposite of a sports bar concept

Except for the big screens showing games, you mean?

The Mime

[identity profile] zmook.livejournal.com 2008-04-16 01:50 pm (UTC)(link)
What, you don't like the tableau of the desperate mime, pleading for his very life under the stern judging stare of Satan and Mrs Claus? I don't understand.

My confessions

[identity profile] lefauxfrog.livejournal.com 2008-04-16 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm a bit ashamed to admit that after several visits I still haven't truly gotten the hang of ordering a burrito at Anna's. They're friendly, but it's one of those places where you have to know how to do something well before you try it for the first time.

Most of my favorite bars, restaurants, coffee shops, and stores are outside Davis Square.

I prefer Boloco's burritos but the restaurant's spartan and industrial furnishings doesn't help them attract customers.

I've repeatedly signed up for the e-mail wine tasting list at the otherwise awesome Downtown Liquors but I've never received a single e-mail from them. When I showed up in person they told me the tastings were only for people on the e-mail list. Urgh.

I agree that CVS street window displays are a giant lost opportunity.

Bad stories and long lines prevent me from trying breakfast in Ball Square.

I like Starbucks more than Diesel and True Grounds more than either one of them.

I root for every local business with surly staff or owners to fail and I do my part to discourage people from visiting them. Operating a business for decades is no excuse for being rude to new customers.

I don't mind useful gentrification like the new CVS.

I like the food at RedBones and love their beer selection but I've always preferred BBQ served with sauce on the meat, not the side.

I apologized to one of the Davis Square statues the other day after almost walking into it. I shouldn't read so much while walking home from work.

After reading this whole thread a second time, I wanted to say that this is, I'm quite confident, my favorite davis_square thread of all time.
