Current exhibit at Inside OUT Gallery (CVS windows)?

I was thrilled and astonished by the sudden (to me!) appearance of the amazing installation in the CVS window gallery. Does anyone know anything about it? Some people walking by recognized one of the artists as "Skunk" and said something about looking up what sounded like Eight Grit? 80 Grit?

I'd love to know of any writeups on this installation and also how long it will be up?

I am so happy to live in a neighborhood where something like this is possible!

Anybody recognize this (possibly) abandoned dog?

Somerville Animal Control is seeking information on this dog. A witness observed someone tie him to a utility pole on Morrison Ave at approximately 9:30am on 6/9/12 with the chain seen in the photos. There was a matchbook with "my name is Carter" written on it attached to the chain. More pictures of the dog are available upon request. Anyone with information on this dog should please call Somerville Animal Control at 617-625-6600 ext 2190.

Why find the owner? Because Animal Control needs to have the current owner formally surrender the dog before they can send him to a rescue. Otherwise, they need to hang onto him for 10 days before he's eligible for adoption.

Places to stay

A couple of months ago I posted a query to the livejournal for a place to stay in the Davis Square area (see http://davis-square.livejournal.com/2847544.html). There were lots of good suggestions, but I ended up with two that were not suggested and thought I would just repost with their info for future reference....

FREE packing paper available

We have enormous quantities of plain, white packing paper (newsprint) that was used to protect our dishes and other fragile items when we moved to the area.  [Similar to this]  Now that we've unpacked, we're happy to give it away to anyone who needs it.  It is used-- and is very crumpled-- but absolutely re-useable for padding boxes and wrapping dishes, glasses, etc.

If you're interested, please contact me at vardit (dot) samuels @ gmail (dot) com by Thursday night.  I'll recycle whatever isn't claimed by the end of the week.  Please plan bring a car (or at least some large boxes or bags) to transfer the papers to when you pick them up.

pigeon and rat problem

Question: Is there any way I can speak to a live city of Somerville employee about rat control? The story is that on the side street where we park, people throw tons of bread, bird seed, and other random food items [once someone left an entire plate of spaghetti] out several times a week in order to feed a flock of pigeons. As it is, it's pretty disgusting. The street and sidewalk are covered in bird poop and you risk that happening to your car if you park in the four or so spots that make up the "pigeon zone". In the last few months, the feedings have increased and the pigeons are everywhere. Now we're starting to see rats in the neighborhood, presumably eating all the food that gets strewn about.

I've called 311. I've left a phone message with the Health Department. I've sent in an electronic complaint with photos. All this and I haven't gotten a single response. Preferably, the city would put up a sign asking people not to feed the pigeons. I don't know exactly what the laws on that are here, so perhaps that's not a possibility. It would be really nice though to at least get a response to my inquiries. Is there anyone else I should be contacting, or is this a lost cause and we're just going to have to put up with pigeon poop and rats?

Housing openings in nearby Porter Square as of August 1 to September 1; move-in date flexible!

I realize that this is in nearby Porter Square, but believe this is considered close enough to Greater Davis to post here. Please let me know if I've erred in tagging or some other protocol.

TL;DR Version:
Two bedrooms opening in beautiful apartment in heart of Porter Square. All residents friendly, responsible, fun and geeky! Rent ranges from $650/month to $900/month based on bedroom size, and is up for negotiation. Move-in date some time between August 1 and September 1, possibly with some flexibility if that's helpful!
