Faustian T-shirt read-through

Following up on the previous post http://davis-square.livejournal.com/3757806.html

Sunday, March 5 at 1:00, at the Vogt/Grossbart residence at 2D Chester St (Mass Ave end), we will have an informal read-through of my new comedy I Made a Faustian Deal With the Devil and All I Got Was This Lousy T-shirt. Ring and we'll buzz you up.

There will be a second read-through on Saturday, March 18 at 1:00, at the Ringel/Koerber residence at 112 Highland Ave Unit E.

read-through of new comedy on Chester St

Hello, Davis Square! I've posted here in years past about my writing (my Never After played at the Somerville Theater in 2009), and I've got a new script needing feedback. I Made A Faustian Deal With the Devil and All I Got Was This Lousy T-shirt is a full-length comedy set in Hell, where Catherine the Great, bluesman Robert Johnson, Joan of Arc, Niccolo Paganini, and the non-binary-gendered Devil argue over who among them should escape.

I'm hoping to hold a read-through in the next couple of weeks at a home on the Mass Ave end of Chester Street. There's a poll up at http://doodle.com/poll/p7y8448eh47p3trr to determine the best date. If you're interested in reading aloud, I can send you a PDF of the script. I am particularly interested in finding an African-American man to read Rob Johnson.

Thanks for your interest!

Drag Gospel Festival is Back

Hi Folks,

Here's a fun, beneficial event in it's 6th year that's sponsored by our friends at First Church Somerville:

DRAG GOSPEL FESTIVAL 2016 Benefits the LGBT Asylum Support Task Force!

Sat. Oct. 15, 6-9 p.m. at Club Café, 209 Columbus Ave, Boston. Drag Show! All ages, no cover, love offerings and tips benefit the Task Force

Sun. Oct. 16, 10 a.m., First Church Somerville, 89 College Ave, Davis Sq, Somerville, Drag Gospel Worship! All welcome. Brunch after. Come in drag or come as you are! Love offerings benefit the Task Force

“The higher the hair, the closer to God.”  - Dolly Parton
Contacts:
James Adams/Serenity Jones jamesadamsatfirst@yahoo.com

It’s back! It’s wilder, weirder, and wackier than ever! DRAG GOSPEL FESTIVAL is blazing with bling, dripping with dazzling drag divas, and loudly, proudly full of PRAISE!
All to benefit the LGBT Asylum Support Task Force, which helps LGBT asylum seekers fleeing homophobic persecution in their home countries. Often victims of rape and torture, they are legally unable to work in the USA for a year or longer while they seek political asylum. The Task Force gives them a safe home, food, and other basics of life until they receive a work permit and can legally support themselves.

On Saturday, October 15, the drag divas mix it up at Club Café, Boston! All ages show in the glamorous environs of Boston’s most famous LGBT-friendly club. Featuring: Drag Festival Mama, Serenity Jones; magnificent MC and scintillating songstress from NYC and Philadelphia, Sapphira Cristal; special Guests Mizery; Kamden T. Rage, and others TBA! (To Be Admired, that is).  Soulful sounds from Project Soul and more!
Wear your dancing shoes! Bring lots of dollar bills to tip the drag queens. All tips and love offerings benefit LGBT Asylum Task Force.

On Sunday, October 16, join Drag Gospel Worship and “get dragged to church!” You’ll never think of church quite the same way again. Come as your favorite drag king or queen or come as you are – all welcome! Love offering for the Task Force. Brunch to follow in the fellowship hall.

Somerville Open Studios - some new ones for me

[I asked permission to take photos at every studio pictured in links from this post.]

Before I went to open studios this morning I had the vague idea that I should try to find some new ones or go to a part of the city I don't usually explore during SoS weekend. Once I got there and picked up a map, my idea morphed: Why not spend the whole day going only to studios I'd never been to before - or so long ago that I didn't remember ever having been to them?

[livejournal.com profile] stiltwalker tricked me, by switching from displaying at his own place to teaming up with a few other artists and displaying at one of their homes! :) But I think his was the only work I saw today that I'd seen at past Somerville Open Studios, and it worked out really nicely. A majority of what I saw, I liked a lot, and I found several new favorites. Including, to my surprise, a few very close to Davis Sqaure. If you go Sunday, and haven't been to them, by all means visit:

#23 Nave Gallery Annex : https://goo.gl/photos/n74ue9oGHRXCYwpc8

They've got an exhibit of fiber art work by a variety of artists, many of them 3D. In the photos above are pieces by Emily Brodrick, Chris Motley, Ayelet Lindenstrauss Larsen, Gin Stone, and Jodi Colella.

#24 Darkmatter Park : https://goo.gl/photos/o2jddhMqA3an24Hv5

Katharine VanBuskirk has been here for nearly 20 years, and done almost every SoS, yet I've somehow missed it in the 10+ years I've gone to open studios. She and her husband collaborate on an elaborate garden of perennials, trees, pools, rock arrangements, paths, sculptures, and flowers. They've got some dogs even I, not at all a dog person, think are cute :) She told me they also have a couple of nuthatches that nest nearby and visit often, but I didn't see them.

#26 Ceramics in the basement on Willow Ave : https://goo.gl/photos/DY8KweVUrdyxbVnK6

Julie Peck, Sara Shelton, and Eileen de Rosas, really packed this small basement! Recognizably different styles, though they all go together well, and I appreciated how all of them worked birds into many of their pieces :)

#27 Julie Murphy : https://goo.gl/photos/jYG6SXJPoA7gtNxj6

This was her first time ever displaying her work in a public show or event... and I was the first person to ever buy one of her pieces :) It's the bluish one with trees, bees and nautilus shells at lower right in the third photo, so you won't see that one there, because I have it. But you should totally go and see the rest in person!

#44 Miller Street Studios : https://goo.gl/photos/hNt7DuT5v1LwScxPA

Almost 50 artists at this studio building, but very few participate in SoS. Only two listed on the SoS guide, though there were actually three open, and they have shared studios so you can see their studiomates' work, plus there's a bunch of stuff on the walls, making you wish you could go past some of those closed doors.

In that photo album you can see pieces by or studios of Sandra Allik (mixed media paintings often including wood), Christopher Pullman (who did some really intriguing paintings of a bunch of old potatoes!), Linda Lichtman (glass), and Leo Muellener (large paintings), as well as some of the art-strewn hallways.

A couple of the artists I spoke to said they want to entice more of their neighbors to participate in SoS, and one of them (Sandra Allik, if I remember correctly) was collecting a list of people coming by who hadn't been there before. If you haven't been there before, go and sign her book!

Edit: Although her studio at Miller St is not open for SoS, I just learned that Jodi Colella - one of the artists displaying at the Nave annex - made the large fiber pieces in the hallway at the beginning of this photo set.

#49 60 Park Street : https://goo.gl/photos/erMXkmm7oWSx7Hct6

In this album are some of Brad Carreiro's wood lamp light things, Rachael Holmes' intriguing knit bags and shapes, and whimsical robot-themed paintings by Pecan, as well as the delightful front of the house with its cornoctopus in the yard. If you go in person you'll also see work by a couple of other artists.

As a bonus, here's a nifty plant arrangement by Thomas Fraley at #28 : https://goo.gl/photos/oCg7HtcmpzAvzuCe7 - plants aren't what he's displaying, but he works with professionally and I hope he displays a garden in the future. He'd never seen Darkmatter (#24) so I suggested a visit.

Somerville Birdhouse Project this weekend April 16th at 10AM!

We're just a few days away from the birdhouse launch when we'll be celebrating spring, meeting other folks in the community and hanging beautiful birdhouses in Davis Square!  We are looking for volunteers! (and if you still want to make a birdhouse you have time!)
We expect this year to be the biggest birdhouse day ever! We're really excited for you to join in!

Saturday 4/16 - 10am -  Davis Square community bike path.

On Saturday, you are welcome to volunteer to help in a number of roles:

  • Birdhouse preparing (birdhouses will be water-proofed and prepared with wire for hanging)

  • Coffee / food passing out -- (we have a number of donations coming in)

  • Ladder helping -- moving and holding ladders for those hanging birdhouses

  • Birdhouse hanging -- expert ladder users will place prepped birdhouses in trees.

  • SMILING. that's right. Just straight up smiling. =)

If you need to drop your birdhouse off ahead of time because you can't make it Saturday, please message me and we'll make a plan for your birdhouse!
See you there!

Broken Stained Glass Window

I have two skinny stained glass windows on either side of a regular window on the front of my house. One of the Windows has been cracked for at least a decade and last night a piece of the window finally broke out. I don't think it can be repaired as the window looks pretty bowed at this point. Would love to replace with stained glass again but don't know who to call. Since these windows are pretty common in the area, I'm hoping someone has had some experience with this or knows a good contact I can call??

Thanks!

New artwork on Kenney Park fence?

Anyone know more about this? It's hanging on the outside fence of Kenney Park, facing south to the adjoining parking lot on Grove Street. At the bottom right, the artist's name is Charley Saint Lewis.

Love Fluff? Be a volunteer at the Fluff Festival!

September 26th is the 10th annual “What the Fluff? A Tribute to Union Square Invention”, a festival celebrating the creation of Fluff in Somerville almost 100 years ago. The 2015 theme will be “Fluff X” – like the Super Bowl, Fluff is now rocking a Roman numeral!

The festival absolutely could not happen without our amazing volunteer crew. If you're looking for a unique Somerville Saturday, volunteers are needed for two-hour shifts in a wide variety of tasks. From the prize booth to kiddie games to the cooking contest, there are jobs to fit every personality. There are opportunities for you and friends to work together, and for mature children to work with their parents. We may be looking for a few expert volunteers to step into "fluff captain" roles so if you covet the straw hat, please let me know.

The Festival is at Union Square Somerville on September 26th (raindate September 27th) from 3 to 7 PM, with volunteers needed in two-hour shifts from 12:30 until 8:00 PM. If you can join us, please let me (Karin) know at volunteer AT unionsquaremain DOT com.

May the fluff be with you!

Creator Talk with LB Lee on Mental Health Comics

Hey guys, this is more by Inman Square, but I thought folks might be interested.  I posted here a few months back searching for housing; I remembered a couple folks showing interest in my comics, so here's some stuff going!  Just so you know, the Boston Comics Roundtable does events every weekend or so at their new space over in Somerville.  Check it (and us) out!
Flier image behind cut )

The Boston Comics Roundtable’s Creator Talk series will continue on Sunday September 6th with mental health cartoonist LB Lee. Held at the new Boston Comics Workspace at 561 Windsor St., Studio 306, the event is free and open to the public, though a suggested donation of $5 is welcome. Lee’s talk will begin at 2:00 pm and is sponsored by Ninth Art Press.

Lee lives with Dissociative Identity Disorder, a topic explored in their comic MPD For You and Me. Their work, populated with “mentally unusual people,” incorporates rigorous research with a playful approach. They have appeared at various academic conferences and comics conventions, shining a light on the realities of trauma, homelessness, eating disorders, and other less-than-traditional but important topics.

Lee’s Creator Talk will focus on process, from research to the final product. They will discuss the challenges that come with mental health cartooning—telling difficult stories and translating psychological phenomena into readable art—as well as personal challenges that come with working around a disordered memory.

About LB Lee
LB is a multivarious entity who make mental health comics, draw pretty pictures, and write stories about a mythical medieval Europe where the Roman Empire never existed. You can find more about LB Lee and their work online at http://healthymultiplicity.com/loonybrain/Home.html.
