Chipolte? Where Halloween Scream used to be...

Do we really need more burrito's and taco's? Couldn't something more fun and maybe useful have bought that space?
now I wont be able to get last minute halloween stuff....

Chipotle is really good though, so it's worth it. Try the one up in Medford (@ the intersection of 16 and 28, about a mile or 2 from Powderhouse Sq).

You must be fairly new here, as you don't remember it as the (not especially lamented) Buck-a-Book.

Well, maybe [livejournal.com profile] vinyl_raven just thought more of the space when it was Halloween Scream rather than Buck-A-Book.

But yeah, once this opens, there will be at least eight places selling vaguely burrito-like things between Teele and Wilson squares: Rudy's, Blue Shirt, Chipotle, our Anna's, Boloco, Qdoba, the Porter Square Anna's, and Tacos Lupita.

Maybe Halloween Scream could move into one of the vacant storefronts next to Kickass Cupcakes?

Although the owner of Kickass told me that an Italian restaurant is moving into the corner storefront (where Out of the Blue, and earlier Dolly's, used to be). She said the restaurant will be owned by the former owner of Savannah Grill -- whose pancakes I still miss.

well, chipolte is nasty so I'm sure it won't last. :P

I'm surprised another major national chain entered DS without a bit more uproar.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2007-09-10 01:58 pm (UTC)(link)
In this case, I think people were glad to just have the space filled already. The space had been empty for at least two years, maybe even three, not counting the couple of Octobers that Halloween Scream occupied it.

Plus, this chain is new to the Boston area (unlike Quiznos, for instance).

The whole "do we need...couldn't something else" line of thinking annoys me. "We", in the broader community sense, can't make a business appear. At best, "we" have ways of opposing businesses we actively don't want, but only the people creating businesses can actively make something happen. I see this in neighborhood meetings and the like - "Why can't we have a grocery store there?" Well, maybe because nobody's trying to open one.

> "Why can't we have a grocery store there?" Well, maybe because nobody's trying to open one.
Sure, but if somebody's looking to open a grocery store somewhere in the area and is doing some research, it might be helpful for them to hear that lots of people in a particular community are grousing about not having one. Not that that should be the sole decision-making factor, but it's certainly relevant.

Anyway, it's fun! Every so often my friends and I do the "What would be Your Perfect Davis Square" -- all our favorite kinds of stores & restaurants we'd want if we could design it ourselves, so that we'd never have to leave again. Mine would have a hardware store and a few more used/independant bookstores, among other things (which wouldn't hurt M&M, when you have enough bookstores in the same area, it becomes a book-shopping destination). And maybe also a paint-your-own-pottery place! And a Trader Joe's! :-P

Chipotle plans to use the plaza for seating, which I think will be a good addition to the square (at least in warm weather).

[identity profile] billharnois.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 02:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel that businesses could do so much more with that nice off-street plaza. It's a shame that it's filled up with HIV/Planned Parenting/Karate type places. I like Chipotle, and I'm glad that they're making some real outdoor seating there (I also like Anna's, Boloco, and Taco's Lupita).

[identity profile] wallacestreet.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Last year, I talked for a while with one of the people who ran the Halloween shop, the daughter of the owner whose name I now forget. They were happily surprised to be returning to the same space again and fully expected it to be rented out during the year. I believe that they did quite well, though, and she said that they would try to return to the Square in a different location when the Buck-a-Book place was no longer vacant.

As for Chipotle, I say thank goodness that something is moving in there, and that they didn't turn the whole thing into an H&R Block. Talk about a useless chain moving in and replacing a local business (the Bangladeshi convenience store) with no uproar.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2007-09-10 07:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the "no uproar" was because the Bengali store had been out of business for more than a year before H&R Block moved in. That said, I don't see what purpose an H&R Block serves except between March 15 and April 15.

I have desperately missed Chipotle burritos ever since I moved back from Chicago, and could not be happier about their arrival in Davis Square.

That said, its Chipotle. The T comes before the L. Try not to be one of the millions of people who routinely get it wrong. (Not trying to be snarky, just helpful -- hearing it the wrong way just always makes me cringe.)

Here here

Chipotle is really good. They are everywhere in Arizona and having lived here for a few years it will be nice to have it in close proximity even if it is a chain.

chipotle is great!

very happy for it to come to davis.

[identity profile] mizufae.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
chipotle is one of those chains that you can hate from a culinary perspective all you please, but you can't really hate from a business practices or hiring perspective unless you're an off the grid living, vegan, no tv owning hardcore fellow, in which case there's no point to you complaining about chain restaurants in the first place.
that being said, i wish we had a hardware store in the square more than another burrito place. the local source for cilantro must be planning on daily truck deliveries at this point.

[personal profile] ron_newman 2007-09-10 05:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Tags in Porter Square is pretty close by, and probably is sufficient for most local hardware needs.

[identity profile] duffless2323.livejournal.com 2007-09-10 05:40 pm (UTC)(link)
No, but what we really need is another Drug Store!

In all seriousness, I would love if we had a bookstore cafe that also sold beer. I mean a real bookstore, McIntyre and Moore serves its purpose but how often do I need a 30 year old book about Hungarian basketweaving.

There is a bookstore/bar/cafe/restaurant in Dupont Circle, DC. That would rule. I'd rather see a good pizza place go in davis, like Antonia's in Amherst. But thats just me and my worthless 2cents.
