Bit more info on Chinook

I was in Dsquared the other day and ended up in a conversation with the owner and another customer about Chinook. The Dsquared owner said Chinook had actually been doing quite well, and that the owner of Chinook had been wanting to sell the store or close for some time so she could move back to the UK, where she and her husband were from and where her husband had been needing to be about half the time lately. So the closing of Chinook, at least according to this account, was for purely personal not economic reasons, which is a relief. [Side note: Chinook has been un-window-papered for a bit so they can sell off the fixtures so if you want to buy any of them or to say goodbye now's probably a good time.]

Also, the Dsquared owner said that she thinks small, indy shops in Davis are still generally doing well, despite the recession, because local folks are making an extra effort to shop locally when possible.

Marino's Pizza close to Teele Sq is closed

I don't remember seeing a post on this so I thought it might be good info for someone looking for a commercial space. My grandmother called to order a pizza a couple of weeks ago from the fairly new Marino's pizza and there was a message saying they had closed and thanking people for their business. It is sad they had to close they really weren't there that long.

Any ideas what would come in and be a nice addition to the neighborhood? I really hope it is not more pizza or a convenience store.

Painters

Does anyone have a recommendation for house painters (I only need interior work) in the area? The tagged posts are a bit dated and I haven't learned much from yelp/kudzu etc.

Thanks!

Bike Friday

Are there any other Davis people taking part in this month's Bike Friday? Davis Square is one of the points of origins for the various convoys of bike commuters. Last month's Bike Friday was rainy and I chose to skip it so I've not actually participated before (and riding in a police escorted group may prove more annoying than my regular commute) but the timing and the location are right and there are snacks at Gov't Center when I get there so I thought I would give it a try.

power outages?

Does anyone know the cause of this week's power outages? At first, i just assumed that it was the typical too-many-ACs brownout but it seems like a lot of occurrences in a short time.

Additionally, does anyone know if natrional grid/nstar have sites where they post up such information?

A good day

So I knew yesterday was going to be a good day when I was able to walk by both Starbucks and Diesel Cafe without being approached by any of the kids repping Save The GreenPeace Children from Masspirg.  Then I started to wonder, why is it that these guys can so relentlessly solicit donations everyday, yet if they were to put down their clipboards and strap on a guitar and play for donations they could be ticketed or asked to stop for performing without a permit.

What's up with the priorities around here.  I'd much rather be passing by a street performer than a political missionary.
