fresh meat!! I mean BREAD!!

only saw the sign driving by but in the block of stores where the cupcake place is - one of the empty store fronts has a sign with "When Pigs Fly" and "opening soon" and "fresh bread". Could be a joke

OR it could be that there will FINALLY be a place in Davis to buy decent bread. Yay!

(and then I can go to BSC to work off the carbs. See, the creator has a master plan...)

When Pigs Fly is a local-ish bakery -- woo hoo!

[identity profile] m-b-w.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
When Pigs Fly bread is available in local supermarkets and, according to their web site, they have "company stores" in Freeport and Kitery, Maine. I would be very happy to have their first Massachusetts company store be in Davis Square!

If you can make bread half as good as theirs, I guarantee you'll sell it.

I make awesome bread (http://frogfood.peace.net/index.php/category/bread/), but no plans to sell it. You just gotta be my fwend and I'll share. Aww.

I think my brownie pan went with your bread pans :(

Bread pans? What are those? We don't need no steenkin' bread pans!

(That whole wheat loaf was the my first time baking bread in an actual loaf pan.)

(And I really need to get the other bread I've done up there, too. But really, it's just that I'll take an opportunity to whore my food blog.)

I'd love to try it. (Maybe we should have given some out during Reverse Trick-or-Treat.)

On Halloween, [livejournal.com profile] pheromone and I and a bunch of other folks dressed up in costumes and went house-to-house, giving stuff away (beer, wine, rum, cider).

I'm not sure homemade is the best plan for RToT, though if I did, I'd probably go with baguettes (not yet posted) and let people tear off their own hunk. Plus it'd go well with the wine!

[personal profile] ron_newman 2007-11-06 06:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you make challah? Even better, as it's intended for people to tear pieces off.

[identity profile] surrealestate.livejournal.com 2007-11-08 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I made challah once (http://community.livejournal.com/vegancooking/1833471.html) and should really get around to doing it again.

Hey, didn't your propose just a few weeks ago? And now we're already scaling back to just friends. *sigh*

Yes, the wedding is off, alas, since you pointed out that I can't support you in the style to which you're accustomed. At least, I'm presuming that the lifestyle to which you're accustomed doesn't involve two small kids and continuous utter chaos. ;)

But we can still be friends! It's not you, it's me!

It is a couple bucks cheaper when you buy from them at the farmer's market or at the grocery store.

On their locator page they say their bread is sold at one store in Somerville and one store in Sommerville ;-)

[identity profile] prunesnprisms.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
They have really yummy bread, too. yay!

Ooh, I love their bread. Picked up a loaf of their chocolate bread from the farmers' market at South Station last week; made french toast with it that weekend. Yum.

Still, at $5 and $6 a loaf, it's not exactly a regular grocery item for me. ;)

oh god i hope they come here. i ADORE their bread and it's always sold out at MB when i go for it. ahhhh!!

[identity profile] hrafn.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 02:41 am (UTC)(link)
Oh. My. GOD. They make such good bread! Yay!!!

On the other hand: such temptation! So close at hand! Boo!

[identity profile] heliopsis.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very fond of Lyndell's whole wheat, and their White Mountain bread is delicious. I also enjoy their Honeycomb Graham bread from time to time, though it's a little sweet for an every day bread. And all of these are a lot cheaper than anything from When Pigs Fly.

temptation

[identity profile] bitty.livejournal.com 2007-11-13 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I try to limit myself to a loaf per week, since the farmers market is across the street from me. However, the market is now closed so temptation can pass me by.

[identity profile] magpie-leah.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 01:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Huh. I'm surprised. This isn't listed on their website but I saw a When Pigs Fly "company store" when I was in Camden, Maine. Camden is one of those towns where the center has become shoppy-shop central -- in that canned quaint kind of way with stores like, Stonewall Kitchen store, Yankee Candle store, etc.

I have a few further thoughts:

1. I really like their bread and it's hard to find good fresh baked bread in that area, so this is great if they do come here

2. It would be funny if someone really did mean the sign as a joke! like... "Fresh Baked Bread -- Ha! When pigs fly!"

3. If they are moving in there, they must be taking over more than one space? I can't imagine that any of those three remaining empty alone would be enough room to bake, display and sell bread.

When I talked with the guy selling WPF bread at the farmer's market a couple of weeks ago, he mentioned that there might be a more local (than ME) storefront opening up, but they'd still be bringing the bread down from ME; the owners don't want to have more than one actual bakery. (I know they bring it to the Kittery store from the bakery too.)

[identity profile] magpie-leah.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 03:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops. I think maybe I was wrong when I said I saw one in Camden, ME. Come to think of it, it might have been in Freeport, ME. Just don't want any of you to mistakenly drive 4 hrs to Camden only to find there's not one there! ;)

[personal profile] ron_newman 2007-11-11 09:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Looks to me like they're taking just one storefront. Another one has a sign saying it will soon hold "The Green House", a florist.

cheap local bread

[identity profile] trouble4hire.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 02:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Though it's a bit of a hike from Davis Square, Iggy's Bread of the World has delicious fresh bread. Iggy's sells to lots of restaurants in the area. It's pretty cheap if you buy it direct from the bakery--$3 for a loaf. There's a huge price break once you get away from the Iggy's bread marked up at the supermarket.
The Iggy's store is located on Fawcett St, which is off of Concord Ave near Fresh Pond. There are buses from Harvard that go along Concord, or you can walk the bike path to Alewife and then down Fresh Pond Parkway.
And their bread (and bagels!) keep pretty well if you put them in plastic bags in the fridge.

[identity profile] magid.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
All my friends love Iggy's. The only problem for me is that Iggy's doesn't have kosher certification... and When Pigs Fly does.

[identity profile] readsalot.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 07:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Another benefit of going to the Iggy's bakery is that you can buy their amazing cookies (not cheap, but delicious.) I used to go there fairly often when I lived near Fresh Pond, but not so often now, since I'm in Somerville and the Walden Street bridge is closed.

[identity profile] dylanesque29.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 02:46 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a local bakery that sells it's bread at the White Hen on Broadway, in Ball/Powderhouse. Their name escapes me, but they make this excellent sourdough-esque wheat.

[identity profile] aquaflame16.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Are you thinking of Nashoba Brook? ( http://www.slowrise.com/ )
We are big fans. This is also the bread that True Grounds uses for their sandwiches. (If anyone works downtown they also have a cafe by Back Bay station that sells even more kinds of their bread, pastries, etc.)

[identity profile] dylanesque29.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, that's them. Their bread is genius.

Bread?? What we need is more burritos!
