crossing guards

Does anyone know where I could find the regulations governing crossing guards? Is it something regulated by the State or the town? My google-fu isn't what it used to be.

This morning I was walking through Union Square and I saw a crossing guard dart out in front of traffic on a green light to hold up his "stop" sign to let adults cross the road. Cars had to quickly brake and I'm surprised there wasn't a traffic accident of some sort.

1) Crossing guards shouldn't stop the flow of traffic at green lights, right?

2) Where I grew up, crossing guards wouldn't even hold up their stop sign for adults. They were there to make sure that school age kids crossed the road safely. Only in Massachusetts have I routinely witnessed crossing guards concerned with adults crossing the intersection.

Hopefully it was just because today was brutally cold and he didn't want to wait for a red light.

Somerville institution rumored to be closing...

I haven't seen any other posts on this, so I figured it was worth sharing for all of those Soundbites lovers out there... The breakfast institution Soundbites will close (Feb. 15) - due to a lack of fire exit.

Cold Weather Alert Jan. 15-16 -- Heating Centers Open

Current forecasts call for dangerously cold temperatures and hazardous wind chill conditions through Saturday, January 16th.  Residents should try to minimize outside activities, and be especially alert to the safety of the elderly and the very young.  Hypothermia is a genuine hazard in these conditions. For those with heating emergencies or no access to shelter, the city will be operating warming centers at the following locations: the Holland Street Center at 167 Holland Street; the Ralph & Jenny Center at 9 New Washington Street and the Cross Street Center at 165 Broadway.  All warming centers will be open on Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and the city will extend the hours if needed.  Please be alert to anyone who may be suffering distress as a result of the cold weather – and be especially conscious of the needs of elderly neighbors.  Please also be conscious of the fire risks associated with electric space heaters.  If you see anyone in your neighborhood, or on the streets, who may need assistance, don’t hesitate to call the Somerville Police at 617-625-1212.  For additional information, please call 311.

Fax you, Davis Square!

Looked briefly thru tags but couldn't find anything about fax machines in Davis.  I need to fax this afternoon.  But where?

space for ukulele players

this is a long shot, as we'll probably end up at an apartment but- a group of beginner ukulele players is looking for a space to gather/drink/practice, and i was curious if anyone has some insight into a local place davis/porter/harvard that wouldn't mind a little random noodling on a weeknight if we promised to drink/buy food.

Purse snatching last night, College Ave near Tufts

From Tufts' public safety annoucements:

On January 14, 2009 the Tufts Police received a report from a student who was the victim of an unarmed robbery that took place at approximately 10:45pm. The incident occurred on the corner of College Avenue and Dearborn Road by Anderson Hall. The suspect approached the victim from behind while she was talking on her cellphone and grabbed her bookbag knocking her to the ground. The suspect then fled down Dearborn Road toward Boston Avenue. The victim was not injured.

The victim described the suspect as follows: White male, early 20's, 5'6", thin build. He was wearing a navy blue baseball hat and dark pants, possibly jeans.

People, please be careful. Also, if anyone in the area should find an abandoned bookbag, you might want to notify TUPD.

Actual facts about Ball Square businesses

While we're on the subject of Ball Square businesses, a few updates I thought might interest DSLJ folks:

1) DSLJ favorite rec Paramount Bicycle Repair has moved to Ball Square (from Powderhouse). The new location is in the small strip of stores extending up Bristol Rd (also includes Stinky's, a dry cleaner, a cleaning service, maybe something else?) and seems nice.
Tyler says "spread the word!" about the move, and I'm sure he'd be glad to have people stop by and say hi.

2) The former Urban Gourmet space has signs up advertising help wanted for what will presumably be the new restaurant opening there.
The signs refer to "Eat at Jumbo's: pizza, wings, and grill"
I guess it's meant to be associated with Tufts in some way . . .
(In case anyone is interested in the jobs and you can't read it in the image, it says to email info@eatatjumbos.com or call 617-571-3611.)
pic of sign= )

Personally, I'm a little disappointed, as this really doesn't seem all that different than stuff we already have (On Broadway/Soundbites Grill specifically), I had hoped for a little more variety.  I am glad to see something going in there though, after so long with an empty storefront, and I shall hope for the best! (with vegetarian options, plz ;)

3) Speaking of empty storefronts, the space on Broadway next to White Hen, most recently a real estate office (I think once a CVS?) which has been empty for a little while is displaying building permits indicating it is being converted to a dance studio. I know nothing else, just what it says on the permit, but I'm excited to see the space filled and this seems like it could be a neat addition to the neighborhood.
ETA: a large banner now says "The New Home of Mary Flynn Murphy Dance Studio" and says it will open March 2nd.

4) The Pub (formerly Powderhouse Pub, i.e. the one next to Kelly's. Really, it's just called "The Pub" now.) is now hosting Stump Trivia on Wednesday nights. This is in addition to Soundbites hosting Stump on Mondays (which I assume they are still doing, though I haven't checked, as they are listed on the Stump site).

(hmm, no "Ball Square" tag? would it make sense to have one?)
