The Somerville Public Library and Somerville Community Access Television is still seeking people to enroll in their new collaborative training program for improving people’s digital & technology skills called, Getting Comfortable in the Digital World....

This pilot program will offers free computer, media and technology classes, and will be held at SCATV at 90 Union Square, on the third Tuesday of each month from 11am to 2pm. Participants may also register in advance for a specific time-slot....

The next Digital Literacy training is Tuesday, March 15th from 11am-2pm. During this time the team will focus on “Social Media” from 11am-12pm, then on “Using your Smartphone” from 12pm-1pm and then Digital Storytelling from 1pm-2pm.

Bradley Method of Natural Childbirth Classes

Hi everyone! I've been a member of this LJ community for 8 years (wow! had to check that), and I just finished my training as a Bradley Method instructor. I'm so happy to finally be teaching this amazing class (it changed my life and helped bring my two amazing babies into the world). I'll be teaching out of my home in North Cambridge, right off the bike path (about 10 minutes walk from the Davis T). Classes start in October. The Bradley Method is taught over the course of 12 weeks and focuses on becoming prepared intellectually, mentally, and physically for labor, birth, and beyond. Bradley classes are a great choice if you are interested in a medication and intervention-free birth either at home or in the hospital. Classes include ways of avoiding unnecessary pain in labor, labor positions, exercises, massage techniques, relaxation, informed choices and positive communication with your health care providers, and labor rehearsals. I will also focus on breastfeeding, bonding, and what happens after that most-important-day! Also, one of the main components of the Bradley Method is fully involving the partner or husband, who will learn to be a great coach for you in labor.

Diesel/Forge Baking Company Presents Coffee Night Workshop

This Wednesday, the 26th, from 7-9pm at Forge, there will be a coffee pour over lesson and tix are on sale on Eventbrite. Here's an exerpt from the description:

Forge Baking Company presents our first in a series of workshops. Intro to Coffee and Pour Overs will be an interactive educational 2 hour class with Brendan, our Coffee Trainer. Brendan will be covering the history of coffee; there will be a multimedia presentation as well as a coffee tasting component. The class will highlight pour over technique, as well as offer a platform for participants to make pour overs, and focus on things like grind settings, water, weight, and the timing of a pour over in order to yield a consistently great cup of coffee. Each participant will receive a 12oz bag of an offering from Intelligentsia Coffee upon completion of the class as well as a 10% discount on all retail items purchased that night.

Shobu Aikido Demonstration & Open Dojo

Shobu Aikido's open dojo week kicks off tomorrow night with a demonstration and sake tasting. Doors open at 7:30pm and the demonstration starts at 8. It's a great chance to check out what aikido is all about and drink some free sake on us.

We're then hosting a week of free classes (from Saturday 9/27 through Saturday 10/4) open to members of the community ages 15 and up. No uniform is required, but we recommend workout clothing with short sleeves and pants that cover the knees.

Class schedule is as follows (and is also available on the website):

Saturday 10:00-11:30am
Sunday 9:00-10:00am sword class, 10:00am-12 regular class
Monday-Thursday, 6:30-8:00pm

Aikido is a martial art without competition. The harmonious and natural structure of aikido allows full contact and full speed training with very little risk of injury. The art of aikido unifies offense and defense and teaches the art of remaining neutral and balanced between the two. Based on the battlefield martial arts of Japan, aikido utilizes all methods of barehanded training as well as short staff and sword.

Somerville Skillshare

hi everyone!

This is my first time posting here. I'm relatively new to Boston (arrived in April) and I'll be moving to Somerville in May. One of my friends there got me involved in planning the first-ever Somerville Skillshare happening Sunday, March 2nd at the Armory between noon and 6pm. The event is 100% free thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign, and all ages are welcome. Here's a sampling of the nearly 40 classes we'll have on offer:

Help learning ASL?

Hi guys,

Is there anyone (Deaf or hearing) who would be available to help me learn ASL? Unfortunately, all I can really offer in payment is buying you a cup of coffee when we meet, but you'd be able to get the warm fuzzy of indirectly helping someone recover from alcoholism (fingers crossed). I know fingerspelling, counting up to 20 and maybe a dozen or two other words already, and I have some experience having conversations with a Deaf person via an eclectic mix of signing, lipreading, miming, and sheer guesswork. Need a recommendation for kid's Martial Arts classes

I've been trying to get my two older kids (aged five and three) into martial arts classes since summer, and I was wondering if anyone has a local place that they'd recommend. I'm interested in any place in the area that is good and teaches small kids, though I do have a preference for a place that is based in Chinese traditions as my MIL is offering to pay for "Kung Fu" lessons, and she is Chinese (and old enough to have bad memories of the Japanese occupation).

I know Davis Square Martial Arts would seem to be the ideal solution, but my kids have been on their waiting list since July. They recently offered me a spot for the three year old, but it was on a day I'd told them we could not make when I signed up for the waiting list. I have become frustrated, so I'm asking what other options in the area people might recommend.

Language Lessons

We're interested in enrolling our daughter in an after-school Spanish program. We've been looking at Morgane Mathew's Language Studio.

1) Does anyone have experience there to share? Comment or message me, please.

2) The class-size minimum is three and at the moment our daughter is the only one interested in the Monday afternoon class. If anyone else has a K-2 kid who would like to join us, please let me know, or contact Morgane directly.

Useful things to do in summer

I am free after 4 on weekdays for the next month. I have been bored out of my mind lately with nothing to do in the evenings, but when school starts again I'll be swamped so I can't pick up anything long-term. Does anyone have suggestions for anything I could use that time for that would be useful locally and get me out of the house? I would be willing to volunteer once or twice a week, or maybe take a class (unfortunately, nothing I'm interested in is happening at the CCAE in the next month) or do something else low-cost and low-stress. I like the idea of meeting new people while doing active things. Thanks!

In Hacker Junk Mosaics, kids use cast-off computer parts to make design choices, experiment with shapes, colors and patterns and explore the interaction of 3D and 2D materials while making an abstract work of art to hang on the wall. As adults, making art from computer parts is not only fun, but we get the extra satisfaction of knowing we are transforming outdated technology and putting valuable materials to use – rather than just sending them to the landfill.

We'll be taking apart computers this Saturday from 12-1 pm -- and from 1-3, putting them back together in awesome compositions! If you're interested in checking out open shop or getting your hands dirty taking apart junk computers and learning a little bit about composition, mixed media and design, this is the workshop for you! Open to kids, families, and curious adults who want to take things apart, see how they work, and make new and interesting things out of them.

We like this workshop so much we're offering it twice in one week! We are also accepting donations of used computer parts -- to drop stuff off or learn more about this event, email contact@partsandcrafts.org

looking for students

I am a math tutor, trying to find high school and college students who need some extra help. When I lived in Arlington, I knew places I could advertise where students (or their parents) would see my flyers and call me. Unfortunately, they're mostly too far away from my Somerville apartment. That great bulletin board in the Belmont library draws in students who live in Belmont...and I would really rather find some in Somerville or Cambridge.

1) Are you, or do you know, somebody who is having trouble preparing for exams? I can help review for finals and prepare for standardized tests in math, chemistry, and physics. (Sometimes I also help social science grad students who are confused or intimidated by statistics--exam prep and editing research papers.)

2) Do you know of good places to post flyers? I want them to be seen by students who are having trouble, are ambitious to do better, and have a bit of money. Or just seen by lots and lots of students. Some places (like the Diesel) get covered over amazingly fast, and others (like outside Magpie, or laundromats) seem to never even get looked at. I feel like I'm missing something.

Workshop - Alternative Letterpress: Sunday April 21. 1:00 – 5:00

I know this isn’t Davis Square but I think it might be of interest to my fellow community members.

The Boston Paper Collective, which is located just outside Sullivan Square, is hosting former local Megan King as a guest artist. She will be running a workshop called Alternative Letterpress: Sunday April 21. 1:00 – 5:00 $175, materials included. It is a workshop designed for people who have letterpress experience and want to learn new techniques.
