Whither after Somerville?
It's been clear for a while that I can't afford Somerville anymore, but I'm at a loss as to where to move next.
I've lived in Camberville for eight years, having moved here directly after college. I absolutely love this area--I love that I don't need a car, I love all our festivals, I love the concentration of artists/creatives and scientists/techies, and I love that Somerville is an actual community, not just a city. As a single, childless freelancer, I need those things to avoid going all Jack Torrence.
Does anyone have any suggestions for cities (local, national, international) that would suit someone who loves Somerville but can't swing $1500/mo for a one-bedroom, $18 for a sandwich/latte at a cafe, etc.?

ISO wheelchair accessible space for occasional small meetings, for rent
I'm looking for space to hold some small occasional meetings. I'm a therapist who has started offering, as a commercial service, a kind of training seminar for junior therapists. I'm having trouble finding appropriate space to rent for this.
What I am trying to find is a space with seating for 5 to 11 people. It could be chairs in a ring, living-room style, or seminar-style around a table -- really any configuration that supports having a conversation. I don't drive, so it would need to be T-accessible so I could get there. It would need to have a door that closes so we could discuss confidential things. I'm looking for something I can rent on an hourly basis, on Friday or Saturday afternoons or evenings.
And -- here's what's making this hard -- it needs to be wheelchair accessible and affordable. ( Help? )

Who marketers say we are...
We're affluent, well-educated singles and partner couples who love life in the big city and hold professional positions in business, finance, legal, computer, and entertainment. Most of us don't own a home or a vehicle; we rent apartments close to amenities, and either work from home or walk, bike, and take public transportation to get around. We're cultivating our nest-eggs instead of feathering our nests, investing in mutual funds and contributing to our retirement plans. Physical fitness is a priority, so we exercise regularly, pay attention to nutrition, and buy organic food at high-end grocers. Regular expenses include nice clothes, traveling, and treating ourselves to lattes at Starbucks or treatments at spas. Laptops, cell phones, and iPads are always on so we can stay connected. Leisure time is filled with visiting art galleries and museums; attending the theater, opera, and rock concerts; reading books and newspapers electronically; and going to bars and clubs.

Help learning ASL?
Is there anyone (Deaf or hearing) who would be available to help me learn ASL? Unfortunately, all I can really offer in payment is buying you a cup of coffee when we meet, but you'd be able to get the warm fuzzy of indirectly helping someone recover from alcoholism (fingers crossed). I know fingerspelling, counting up to 20 and maybe a dozen or two other words already, and I have some experience having conversations with a Deaf person via an eclectic mix of signing, lipreading, miming, and sheer guesswork. If you're interested, PM me!
Thanks!
And sorry for the weird tags... I couldn't really decide what fit and just kinda went to town. Ron, feel free to rein me in.

Bringing float tanks to Somerville
![[livejournal.com profile]](https://www.dreamwidth.org/img/external/lj-userinfo.gif)
This sort of facility is becoming more common on the west coast (e.g. floathq.com), but doesn't exist currently in New England, and we think it should.
We haven't chosen a location yet, but think there would be a good audience for flotation (sensory deprivation) in the Davis area. On the other hand, Davis is quite busy, and if we open in an area with loud trucks and rumbling trains, we'll have to spend quite a bit more on soundproofing. Our ideal location, in fact, is a bit of a paradox -- it's accessible to public transit and also to the highways, it has at least a few spots of reserved parking, it's not on a main road, but is easy to find, and ideally it's a one-story building with quiet neighbours. Good luck to us! But if anyone has suggestions, we'd love to hear them.
Meanwhile, we have a short survey: floatboston.com/survey
If you'd like to see us open in west Somerville, please fill it in! Also, if you sign up for our mailing list, you'll be in line for cool pre-opening discounts once we get everything organized.

Why no lockdown?
(I don't need an official order to be told to stay close to home today, but between this and not getting any notification that the MBTA was down...)

Free Community Rooms in Somerville?
I'm looking for a community space that I could use for free to host a book club. Probably around 15 people total. Is there anywhere in Davis/beyond that could accommodate us?
Thanks again!

Gauging interest in a new Davis Sq co-work space
My partner and I are trying to get an idea of the interest in a co-working space in Davis Sq. Are there enough people out there who could use a co-working space? Is there a latent need? Are there enough people to keep a space running here in Davis Sq? Are there office space owners who would be interested in exploring what co-working might mean?
Our goal is to create an affordable space which offers at least the following:
Affordability: ~$200/Month per a person for full time use ~$100/Month for part-time use.
24/7 access
Phone booth for private phone calls
Conference rooms with data projectors.
Ultra high speed internet
Use of our address as your business address. Get notified via email when you receive a package.
Fully stocked kitchen with food and drinks – yogorts, fruits, soft drinks, snacks, and cold beverages
Copier, Printer, & Fax
Storage lockers for your belongings.
We are exploring a space within a 4minute walk of the Davis Sq T. This particular space has great natural light via numerous skylights. It is about 3200sqft.
If you are interested, please drop me a line at ike@realtywarp.com with questions, comments, and/or concerns.

Posters Stapled to Trees UPDATE
This all started a few days back. I was walking home from something I can't remember what in Davis Square when I suddenly noticed that there were posters stapled to nearly every tree (and pole) in my immediate neighborhood. Literally, virtually every tree had a poster stapled to it, if not two! It was insane.
They were all for a start-up (using that term very loosely as I work in the start-up arena and would never consider doing something so stupid as this) call Scoop 'N' Scoot Ice Cream that offers a speedy ice cream delivery service, apparently to any or all posters in the area. Well, as they offered an 'Order by Text/Call' service, I immediately sent them a text of what I thought of their redecoration of my beautiful neighborhood . . . and this is what transpired.

Looking for space for meetings
I'm looking for space for a couple different types of meetings:
1- Space for meetings for Occupy Somerville. I expect we'll need varying sizes - large rooms, for General Assemblies (we had about 50 people at our first, but that was outside, so I expect we'll get more people in indoor spaces), and smaller spaces, for working groups (though groups that are relatively small can definitely easily meet in coffee shops). Proximity to Davis Square is not required; in fact, suggestions for good meeting spaces all over Somerville would be good! Our first priority is finding a big space for GAs.
Preferred times - probably evenings.
2- Space for a group of crafters and artists to meet, once or twice a month. Doesn't have to be in Somerville at all, though I am personally biased towards not having to commute into Boston. If we could fit 30 people in to a space with tables and chairs, for working on sometimes messy stuff, that would be ideal! We promise to clean up thoroughly.
Preferred day/time - Saturdays, midday/afternoon/evening, but other days and times may be possible.
In both cases, we're looking for space that is available for no charge or for very low fees.
(Wow. I don't even know what to tag this.)

Wild shot in the dark: Any primitive instrument makers in the area?
I've got a bone (we had lamb shanks for dinner just for this!). I've got a drill. I even found a few diagrams online... but they make no sense to me. My brain just can't understand them for some reason. Lack of sleep, perhaps.
So, do any of you lovely folks happen to make bamboo/bone/primitive whistles in your spare time? If so, would you be willing to trade some of your time in exchange for one of my hobbies? I can cook, bake, make jam, and make Waldorf dolls. In a pinch, I'd love to just borrow a book with non-sucky diagrams.
I'm hopeful that, in the city that brought us Honk!, this isn't quite the wild shot in the dark that it would be anywhere else in the country. Thanks.

Long Term Somerville?
Do you see yourself here as a long term, or potentially permanent resident?
Do you have kids here already? Are they in the Somerville Schools? If no kids would you raise kids here?
Do you own property or are you renting? If renting would you like to buy?
