Walk Deanna ALL THE WAY HOME: Rally and Remembrance!

Walk Deanna Home this Saturday, March 30 at 5 p.m. starting at the Winter Hill School upper schoolyard off Sycamore.

Family and friends of Deanna Cremin will march the streets of Somerville once again in the hopes of generating new leads that may lead to the arrest of her murderer. This time we will symbolically walk Deanna ALL OF THE WAY home, passing where her boyfriend claims to have left her the night she was murdered.

We will rally at the upper Winter Hill schoolyard and March up Sycamore St. to Broadway stopping at Deanna’s boyfriends house at the time of the murder (419 Broadway). We will make a brief stop pausing for a short moment of silence then making our way back down Broadway going left onto Main St. and taking a right onto Moreland St. then right onto Heath Street.

Continuing down Heath with another brief at the corner of Heath and Bond St. (the halfway point where her boyfriend said he left her that night). From there we will go down Bond making a left onto Jacques St. pausing at the Elderly complex and then on down Jacques to Deanna’s old house parting ways from there returning to our cars.

Family and friends of Deanna hope you will march with them in memory of that tragic night.

got smacked by a car

Got hit by the sideview mirror of a silver/bronze crysler(?) minivan with MA plates this morning around 8:20 while crossing the street between Downtown wine and spirits and Christo's pizza. It went out of its lane to hit me in the arm in the oncomming lane, and was inches from rolling me over the hood. Unfortunately I was too shocked to get its plates before it drove out of sight. So, just, be careful, and if you see a minivan with a folded down drivers side sideview get its plate number for me.

What was going on last night on Ossipee Rd?

At about 4:15 a.m., I woke up and heard people being loud and breaking things outside. A few minutes later, it sounded like a cop came and arrested at least one person. Anyone know what happened?

Update: I just took a walk around and didn't see any damage to houses, so I'm guessing it might have been a car break-in.

Recovering stolen cameras and sd memory cards

A couple of weeks ago my car was broken into here in Davis Square and my camera and camcorder were stolen.  I don't usually leave them in the car.  I forgot that they were there and when I remembered the next day, they were gone.  Unfortunately there was a bunch of videos from my daughters first year of life that I hadn't downloaded yet.  I'm more upset about that than the cameras. I keep hoping that the memory cards might still be out there, and whoever took them, or has them now might be willing to sell them back to me.   I know it's a long shot but has anyone had any luck recovering stolen goods like this? I filed a police report and have been checking craigslist. Any tips on next steps to take?   Thanks in advance.

Somerville Police Looking for Witnesses to Pedestrian Accident on Powderhouse

Tufts Student in Critical Condition After Getting Hit by Car

http://somerville.patch.com/articles/tufts-student-in-critical-condition-after-getting-hit-by-car

The driver of the car who hit the student, also a Somerville resident, cooperated with investigators, police said, but they believe at least one more person was standing at the intersection when the accident took place and that another vehicle was driving behind the car involved in the accident.

BOLO: Crying Velvet Elvis from MOBA/Somerville Theatre

As the 2nd in my continuing series documenting art theft in the Greater Davis Square area, I bring you today a heartbreaking theft from the Museum of Bad Art.

From their Facebook page:

ANOTHER THEFT AT MOBA!

This piece has been stolen from the MOBA gallery in the Somerville Theatre. It was on display for informational purposes only, as we do not include paintings on velvet in the collection. This is the second theft this year; it's getting annoying. If you are the selfish lout who took it, or have information about the piece's whereabouts, please contact: curator@museumofbadart.org.

See the painting... )

Crime alert: Indecent assault, Dover Street, 8 pm yesterday

From a Somerville Police press release:

Somerville Police are investigating an indecent assault and battery that occurred in the Davis Square area Monday evening. At about 8 p.m., a 32-year- old woman was walking from the Davis Square MBTA station to a nearby address. She exited the station through the rear of the Holland Street side.

The woman proceeded to walk up Dover Street toward Cambridge while talking on her cell phone when she was approached from behind by an unknown suspect who indecently assaulted her. The victim turned around, saw the suspect and screamed while running into the street. The suspect immediately fled in the direction of Davis Square. The victim was not injured and required no medical treatment.

The victim described the suspect as a black male, about 6 feet tall, wearing all black clothing and a black baseball cap.

2 Bicycles stolen in Teele

All,

I don't have much hope of seeing them again, but figured it was worth posting to remind everyone how easily it can happen. I had 2 bicycles stolen from my garage last night or today.

I am attaching a picture of them, it isn't the best quality, but is all I could dig up on short notice. (The Cervelo is safe... she is an inside bike and never sleeps far from me)

Bike1 - Red Gary Fisher Sugar Mtn Bike:

  • Stickers are all removed and the fork is blue.
  • The hubs are Chris King and make an unmistakable sound while coasting. I will miss that sound :-(
  • I have an extremely close bond to this bike. It has taken me over the Rockys many times, if I see it while driving down the road, I will abandon my car to chase the thief down.

Bike2 - Blue Novara Hybrid:

  • Fairly stock except for the removal of the kickstand

If you see anything, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks and be safe

Who would steal a work of art called 'Honesty' ?

Seven months ago, my friend Pauline Lim placed nine 'Urban Shrine' assemblages all over Somerville, most of them outdoors. She published their GPS coordinates and challenged geocachers to find all of them.

Last night, after the Redbones Bike Party, she strolled down Holland Street to show another friend the shrine she had placed closest to Davis Square:

(click on the small picture to see a much larger one)

But when she reached the place where it should have been hanging, she discovered that someone had stolen it from the chain-link fence just to the left of Dave's Fresh Pasta.

The name of the missing shrine? 'Honesty'.

If you find Pauline's work of art anywhere -- a trash can, a recycling bin, a yard sale, a flea market -- please tell both Pauline and the Somerville Police immediately. You can reach her at lim at PaulineLim.net. Thank you.

(Earlier [livejournal.com profile] davis_square posts about Pauline's 'Geocaching Urban Shrines' project are here and here.)

Online Somerviile & Cambridge police & fire scanner

Buried in the comments of this post is a useful link to an online scanner for police and fire radio of both Somerville and Cambridge (and also Brookline, Newton, Waltham, Watertown, and Wellesley):

Wicked Local Rangecast Police and Fire Scanner

It requires Java, which takes a while to start up in my browser. You can go back in time up to three hours. This is useful if you want to know why you heard lots of sirens an hour ago.

ETA: Here's another Rangecast scanner, for Somerville, Medford, and Arlington (and also Malden, Melrose, and Winchester).

ETA2: And here's yet another, covering Somerville, Cambridge, Medford, and Arlington (and also Belmont, Lexington, and Winchester). This one's probably the most useful for Somerville residents.

ETA3: Another comment in the earlier post recommends RadioReference.com for scanner feeds.

If you know of other online scanners, especially those allowing you to go back more than three hours, please post comments here.

I've added these links to the [livejournal.com profile] davis_square profile page.

bag stolen from Diesel

So, I lost a brown satchel. Left it at Diesel Friday morning, came back, and nobody had turned it in. Bad me, no cookie.

There were plenty of things in there that would be valuable to people other than myself - like cash and an iPad. There was one thing in there that would be of no value to anyone but is extremely valuable to me and a real bear to replace, namely my (foreign) passport. So if anyone finds a discarded brown satchel (a tattered Kipling), or a discarded Latvian passport, or something along those lines, please, please pick it up and call me. 857-204-8727. I will be forever in your debt.

Yes, I have made a police report.

RAWR! Who stole this Weekly Dig box from Davis Square?

This Weekly Dig box, designed by artist Cat Tweedie at Artisan’s Asylum, has disappeared from its home outside Mike's Restaurant in Davis Square. If you have any information about its current whereabouts, please contact the Somerville Police and/or craigt@digpublishing.com . Thank you.

It is one of five Asylum-designed Dig boxes placed around Somerville earlier this spring.

Bike theft

Sometime very recently, my bicycle was stolen from outside my apartment in south Medford. This is about a 15 minute walk from Davis Square. For all intents and purposes, if you are reading this, there are bike thieves in your neighborhood.

Yes, I am reporting it to the police.
Yes, I would love it if people would keep their eyes out for it... But at the moment I am still so angry I can't remember the make... It's blue...

There is one place that sells bikes that I've always thought looked sketchy, but I'm not going to point fingers. I am going to browse what they have for sale just in case anything looks familar.

I was stupid and only had a regular lock on it, because my U-lock is rusted beyond usability. Please don't make my mistake. I knew I was being stupid, but I told myself I'd get a new lock soon, but I didn't do it in time. Funny thing is, my lock wasn't actually cut. The fence is very slightly damaged, bur not in a way that would have released the bike. I'm puzzled.

Anyway, moral of the story, people are scumbags, keep your bike as safe as possible.

"somerville patrolmen" soliciting ?

i searched the "community issues" tag and didn't see this topic, hope i'm not making an obnoxious retread post...

i just got a call from a fellow claiming to represent the somerville patrolman's association and soliciting donations.  i told him i don't accept charitable solicitations over the phone and he hung up.  it reeks of scam; is there anyone i should report it to ?

thanks.

random act of hate on elm st

I've lived in this neighborhood for ten years and there have been very few incidents in which I feel unsafe.  Unfortunately I have an incident that just happened to me to add to the list.  It's random but I just want to give people the heads up.

I was crossing Elm at Willow this evening and was slightly in the crosswalk as the last car was going by.  It was filled with guys (late teens or early twenties) and as it passed someone yelled "faggot" and threw an open cup of soda really hard into my stomach.  Not only did it get soda all over me but it also hurt.  And they were gone too fast for me to get the license plate number so no real sense calling the cops.

I'm actually a gay woman with short hair and I'm not sure if they just couldn't see me well and mistook me for a man or if they have their gay terms confused.  Regardless, this was definitely a gay bash incident.

Has anyone else in the Davis square area had a similar experience? I mean gay bash, not being thrown in the gut with an object although I'm curious about how common that is too.  Maybe I've just been lucky that it's never happened to me here before?
