The Spotted Apron's red velvet cupcakes are divine -- our apartment has a weakness for them. Though I have plenty of family in the South, I think I actually discovered Red Velvet cake by watching the movie version of Steel Magnolias (which takes place in Louisiana), in which Julia Roberts' character's wedding cake is a white-iced, armadillo-shaped red velvet cake. It's hilariously disturbing. Or disturbingly hilarious. Not sure which.
