So... has anyone else had car trouble so far this winter?

Just wanted to share the awesome between-2-and-9-a.m. event that I was blessed enough to wake up to.

Thank you. Thank you for not leaving a note and ruining my morning by requiring me to read something. Thanks for driving at ungodly speeds up my tiny one way street.

Last night I saw a cab knock a neighbor's side view mirror off. He just took off, too.

Ugh. Might it have been someone backing out of a driveway across the street from you? That happened to me a few weeks back, but the nice folks did leave me a note and are going to pay for the repair.

Suck.

I've had that happen to my car (hanging bumper) as well as another friend who lives in the area. It's really sad but it seems like leaving a note and taking responsibility is the exception around here.

Street Parking

I have been living in Somerville for MANY years and I can tell you this: If you park on the street in Somerville every day / night it is a not a question of IF but a just a question of WHEN will your car get hit / damaged / vandalized and how bad the damage will be. The only way to greatly reduce your chances of damage is to get an off street parking space.

oh man, that sucks. a couple years ago i had the side mirror knocked off my car (my roommate figured it was the plow, since the car parked right behind me had a gouge taken out of the door at about plow height, but no one saw it happen) and then a couple days later someone backed out of the driveway across the street and crunched the side of my bumper and broke the headlight. (which, again, no one actually saw happen, but that made the most sense from the damage.) and no, no one ever left a note. hmph. so i have complete sympathy.

I'm very sorry this happened to you .... but, could you please lj-cut the photo, or maybe post a small one that links to the full-size one? Thanks.

Driveways don't always help

I'm very sorry this happened to you.

I had a similar event happen to my car IN MY DRIVEWAY once, when someone used the driveway to turn around, somehow caught my bumper, and pulled it off. They did leave a note, but I think that's because there happened to be a policeman present.

Oh man, this reeeeally pisses me off. If I had large, expendable sums of money and legal immunity, I would install snipers on my roof to pick off the idiots who blaze down my tiny, one-way street as fast as they can, just to avoid driving one block north to the major intersection.

It won't make you feel any better, but this happened to me when I lived in Brighton, $500 deductible and all :(

this happened to us on Sept. 1 when the neighbors were moving out and ripped our bumper off with their moving van. at least they told us and had insurance... granted, we are now carless because we decided it wasn't worth it to fix after all, and have been using zipcar quite happily. Still, it sucks. I'm sorry it happened to you.

Emergency vehicles go the wrong way up one way streets (in emergencies).

Must be going around. At least the person who took my mirror off this morning (while I was parked in Cambridge) left a note with a phone number. Sucks for me since I have to deal with it, sucks even worse for you since you have to deal with it yourself.

Yep. Every time there's a false fire alarm in my building (something that happens much too often), fire trucks come the wrong way down Day Street.

Sheesh, Ron, I think this is truly the last thing the OP needs to be worrying about right now.

If you post the name of the street this car was parked on, it's possible that the offender is reading this and might be guilt-tripped into confessing by e-mailing you. It's a longshot, but might be worth trying.

Just out of curiousity, do you have any idea what cause the dents and scrapes on the top of your hood? The last time I saw that sort of pattern it was due to an unfortunate incident with a roofdeck, golf clubs, and a cryogenically frozen cantaloupe.

It's reasonable to ask folks to lj-cut photos -- especially if the request is done consistently without regard to content. I appreciate Ron for doing this aspect of community maintenance and taking the trickle of flak it no doubt garners him.

Glenwood?

Are you my neighbor on Glenwood? I saw a car a lot like this when I was walking to dinner a few nights ago. I felt SO bad for the owner!!!

On a happier note, I was out salting/gritting my driveway when I heard a crunch - and went out to the street to see a truck stopping, then a man walking back to leave his info on a car that had just lost its rear-view mirror. Some people are honest! (If he'd left, I would have called the company on the truck.)
