Snow Emergency lifted Monday, Jan 14th at 6 PM


Hello, this is Jackie Rossetti calling from the City of Somerville with snow emergency information for Monday, January 14th. The City has lifted its snow emergency regulations effective 6 p.m. this evening. Residents parked in city lots during the snow emergency have a two-hour window starting at that time in which to move their vehicles. Cars still parked in municipal or school lots as of 8 p.m. may be subject to ticketing and towing. Residents, landlords and business owners are required by city regulations to shovel their sidewalks but may not shovel snow into the street.

In practice, metered lots are free after 8 pm anyway, so the real deadline for getting your car out is 8 am tomorrow when meters go back into effect. School lots are a different story.

since we often tend to complain when the city does things we don't like, I figure it's only fair to issue some praise too.
So, kudos to the decision makers on this for declaring early (making it easier for people to plan appropriately for parking, school, closings, etc.) and for lifting the snow emergency at a time that makes it much easier for residents with regular full-time jobs to move their cars out of lots.

(as it happens, the moving out of lots thing doesn't affect me, but I can appreciate the challenge posed by a snow emergency that ends at, say 11am, on people to whom this does apply and are at work at that time, I assume 6pm --moved by 8pm-- is much better . . .)

Seconded - when I heard the robo call, the first thing I thought was "ooh, 6 pm makes it a lot easier for people at work to move their cars from the lots!"

I had a snow day, and a car parked on the odds, so it didn't affect me either. But it's nice!

I have to agree that the timing of this snow emergency was much better managed for this, the first storm of 2008. By delaying the lifting of the emergency the plows had time to actually remove a lot of snow from the EVEN side of the street without a bunch of cars in the way. Good job to the Champion, and of course, the Mayor.
