[identity profile] eustaciavye.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] davis_square
I swear this is the last time I'll be posting here today. I'm doing spring cleaning and as I find things I'm realizing I need to find places for them.

I have a bunch of clothes. It is women's clothing ranging from size 14-18 all in pretty good shape, a mix of casual and business attire and a few random t-shirts. I'd like to donate it somewhere. My preference is to give it to an organization that will distribute it to people who need it rather than to leave it to be sold at Goodwill. Do any of you work with any organization that provides clothing for people in need or know of a good place to send it? I've got a car so I can deliver if necessary.

i'm not sure if the somerville homeless groups distribute clothing, but i bet rosie's place (http://www.rosies.org/) over in boston's south end would be able to find folks who could use it.

Rosie's Place sucks, but I love your icon! :)

You are welcome!
As for Rosie's...meh... I guess I hold a grudge, but when I was homeless, they turned me away (much like other places, but they were the rudest about it) because I have diabetes and they wouldn't even help me find a shelter that WOULD take diabetics, so I was on the street instead. :/
Kind of haven't forgiven them for that.

that's a pretty good reason to hold a grudge.

Are there any organizations who did help you? I would like to know who you think is worthy of support.

Dress for Success (Boston location) (http://www.dressforsuccess.org/affiliate.aspx?sisid=14&pageid=1) accepts work-appropriate clothing. They also have locations in Worcester and Western Mass.

Just so you know, before you discount them completely, the money earned by selling clothing and whatnot at Goodwill is put into their programs. They do a lot, particularly for disabled adults. They employ people in sheltered workshops and things of that sort. So selling them there isn't like they're just making a profit off of your clothes. Also consider Salvation Army, another good organization. Big Brother Big Sister will pick up donations of clothing and household items, which is very convenient. Also, many churches particpate in clothing drives. For instance, behind St. Catherine's on Summer Street is a collection bin for the St. Vincent de Paul Society which distributes the items, although I don't know where or how.

St. Mary's Women and Children's center in Dorchester REALLY needs clothing on those sizes. The women there are trying to get their GED or job skills. They use they clothing to go to job interviews.

I know its a long drive but its a great organization.

Sadly, not really. :/
Though some of the places being listed below seem pretty cool!
Wish I'd known back in the day.

Wow, I never knew there was anything like that. I just moved away from that area and really could have used something like that.
Glad to see this now though so if I know anyone still in the area I can tell them if they need resources.

I just called them to try to drop off a handful of suits, pants, skirts, tops this weekend, as I'd amassed some giveaways, but the woman on the line said their drop-off times were 10-4 on weekdays. That...works not so well for me and my 9-5 job, so I just went to Goodwill.
