This morning at about 7:00, a garbage truck took down a telephone pole in front of my house. Power lines everywhere - on my car, trapping me in the house. Finally the firemen allowed me to leave, clearly not letting me take my car to work. Luckily the 77 bus goes by work. We didn't loose power, but maybe we have since (at work now). The crazy thing (well, one of the crazy things) is that all the people - firemen and the truck driver and other city employees were pretty much getting a kick out of the situation. I guess it's a pretty big relief to be called out and not have to fight a fire, but it was odd seeing people standing there laughing at a pole and wires down on the street.

There's not really much else for them to do. The utility company has the trained responders for dealing with a downed line. The fire department is there for safety reasons (like keeping you from trying to drive your car.)

Glad to hear you made it to work OK - I'm right down Kingston St from you, so I saw the damage, and heard from my neighbors that nobody was hurt. Did the truck actually hit the pole, or did it get caught on the sagging wires up top & drag the pole down that way? (My neighbors indicated it was the latter - and that's worrying cuz there are a LOT of saggy wires on our street).
