Open studios this Weekend?
May. 3rd, 2008 04:53 pmAre there open studios this weekend? If there are, and you only have time for one or two, what are the best ones to see?
-TIA
Update, looks like they are this weekend. http://www.somervilleopenstudios.org/
My other question still stands, What are the best ones to see? Or what were the most popular ones last year?

Date: 2008-05-03 05:29 pm (UTC)Mad Oyster Studios at 2 Pearl Street (Area A on the SOS Map).
There are over a dozen artists in one spot, but I especially like
Rachel Mello's Painting on Cut Hardboard (#16 on the SOS map)

See the amazing photographs of Ted Beattie
(#59 on the map, 75 Bartlett Street)

The Nave Gallery also has a great mix of artists
(#119 on the SOS Map) 155 Powder House Blvd.

If you live near any of the artists, it's great to support your neighbors, too.
Enjoy!

Date: 2008-05-03 06:12 pm (UTC)Jade Moran & Gideon Weisz (who share a space on Highland) are good too -- Jade Moran did my wedding ring, and Gideon Weisz has these gorgeous metal sculptures with a strong element of nerd.

Date: 2008-05-03 11:24 pm (UTC)The best, hands down, er, up?
Date: 2008-05-03 11:45 pm (UTC)Hilary Scott made all the crazy green hand displays in town, which gives you an idea into the quirkiness of his art. (He'll let you all over the house, but you may need to be escorted by a family member. Sadly, a few years ago some folks didn't respect their hospitality.)
Beyond those two, it comes down to tastes in art, or whether you're there more to see people's spaces than their art. (If the latter, prioritize visiting residences over warehouse studios buildings, like Vernon or Joy.)
The Somerville Museum will give you a taste of a lot of the exhibiting artists. As will the the web site.

Date: 2008-05-04 03:48 am (UTC)Also, there's a raffle to win 6 weeks of free bread from When Pigs Fly, or $50 gift certificate to Artist and Craftsman Supply, if you fill out a survey about SOS found in the map book, and turn it in with any artist or at the museum.
Have Fun!
