I have a relative visiting this week who is Kosher.  Are there any restaurants in Davis Square, Somerville or Cambridge that are Kosher?  I don't want to have to go all the way to Brookline just to get dinner.

There aren't any certified kosher restaurants on this side of the river. Does your relative eat vegetarian out? Otherwise, it's Brookline or Newton for dinner.

How kosher are we talking here? Like, won't eat milk with meat, or like, wants the kitchen to have two sets of utensils?

I know you can put together a completely vegan meal at Spikes, and it's served in paper baskets with no utensils needed. Okay, that idea was stupid.

There are a number of people in this LJ community who keep kosher. I'm sure they'll chime in with some better ideas.

You could bring back some food from Brookline in plastic containers, and not have to keep going back there for every meal.

Not really much of a restaurant, but JP Licks is kosher...

Also, this isn't in Camberville, but the Milk St. Cafe in Boston is strictly kosher. It's near Downtown Crossing, so you could stay on the Red Line. They only serve breakfast and lunch, but maybe you could pick up takeout to save for other meals.

I don't think there are any in camberville but here's a great list for you:

how about Halal food

I used to have a strict kosher friend who would also eat Halal food. As I understand it (and I'm sure this is a vast oversimplification of the theological issues involved), Halal is mostly the same as Kosher, but with a few more restrictions like praying to Allah at certain times in the food preparation process. If your friend is OK with Halal, you could check on restaurants like Ali Baba in Porter or Helmand in Kendall.

you may want to check with the local universities to see if their Hillel Houses will accept out of town visitors. Or, have your relative get in contact with local Shuls and see if anyone will feed him/her in their kitchen.

Yeah, that's a really good plan, Cos. Also, Star Market occasionally has kosher sandwich meats (and you'd need to get a non-dairy kosher bread, but that's not hard).

Sadly, there are no Orthodox-acceptable kosher restaurants in Camberville, other than JP Lick's Ice Cream. :( If your relative is non-Orthodox, there are more options (as others have posted about).

Mmmm, what could be better than a whole week of just JP Licks Ice Cream. Sounds like a great vacation week to me!

Kashrut and Halal are not interchangeable, although Kosher-slaughtered meat is always Halal before preperation, I believe.

Some people keep strict kosher in the home but will eat vegetarian food at non-kosher restaurants out.

You could go to Veggie Planet or Grasshopper -- seeing as they only serve vegetarian food, that's about as close to safe as you can get.

There is the Harvard Hillel dining hall, which serves dinner every night except Saturday. Anyone can pay to eat there. (For Friday dinners you're supposed to pay in advance, by Thursday afternoon.)

However, they're currently closed for the summer.
