I am in search of a venue that has a private room where I can hold a nice cocktail party to celebrate my marriage. Nothing too fancy but nothing run down either. I will probably have 40-50 guests and would like to have hor'dourves and an open bar. Of course, I also don't want to break the bank. I am open to places both in Davis and outside. Gay friendly would be a plus. Does anyone have any recommendations?

My hubs and I had a wedding-related celebration in the private room at Silvertone. The atmosphere is very nice; retro but not too kitschy, cozy but not cramped. If I remember correctly, there was a $1000 minimum, but we were doing it on an off night and they lowered the minimum for us. This was almost 4 years ago, so things may have changed dramatically, but it's worth a call!

Two places that come to mind are Anthony's (http://www.anthonysfunctions.com) on Highland Ave and upstairs at Christopher's (http://www.christopherscambridge.com/parties.html).

I don't have any recommendations, but when my partner and I did this back in '05, gay friendly was pretty much the default. None of the restaurants we looked at in Cambridge, Somerville or Boston seemed at all put off by us being a same-sex couple.

Actually... It's hors d'oeuvre. The French plural has no s at the end, but an s is typically added in English usage to denote a plural noun.

As icecreamempress said, it's a great little restaurant in Boston on Bromfield St, around the corner from the Orpheum. Great food, GREAT staff. Highly recommended!

Umbria in the Financial District

We had a wonderful rehersal dinner for 35 people at Umbria in the Financial District. You might check them out. The number of people felt just right for the size of ths space. They were quite reasonably priced and their second floor has a warm and inviting atmosphere. It's kind of earthy with exposed brick, hardwood floors, and lots of candles if you wish. You can mix it up between tables and standing area pretty easily.

Christopher's

Christopher's wants $1,500 minimum on weekends. Anthony's is great if it was 1985, but it's 2008. This is a very tough question for folks on a "sane" budget. I always have a hard time finding a place to hold a function.

it's not in Davis, but for five hundred dollars you can rent the upper deck of the Boston Sailing Center's River Boat in Lewis Wharf. I think it has a 150 person capacity. The boat doesn't cruise, but it's right on the water and it's a wonderful setting. And for the price you can't beat it.

How much is 'break the bank?'

I waitress at The Blue Room in Kendall Sq, and I must say I think we do some nice private party stuff. :)

My friends had their wedding party at The Milky Way, and that was funfunfun.

We have had assorted work parties at Mother Hunger, The Independent, Enormous Room, and Green Street Grill in recent years. Don't know what their minimum function charges are.

Hope this is at least moderately helpful.

This probably isn't what you want, but someone else may, so I'll link it here:
