Hmm... So I walked by the former McIntyre and Moore space and whoever's moving in there is being mysterious about it. There's a large photo of some wooden bowls in one window and a large photo of a wooden cutting board in the other window. But no company name anywhere. Anyone else thinking it's gonna be "Bowl & Board?"

(I apologize if this has been discussed already. I went a few pages back and didn't see anything.)

Totally. It's not my thing, but it's at least a local chain.

Hi Meredith;

I have always admired your store from a distance and have been meaning to pop in and ask you a question. Have you ever considered carrying clothes for men too? If you do.. I'll buy :)

Thoughts?

Are they moving from Putnam Square (Cambridge) to here?

Hi there,

Yes, I have considered carrying a larger section for men (one rack right now).

I will make an effort to stock up on more men's items, especially if I see that the demand is there.

It's hard when the women buy clothing at a pace 2000 times quicker than the men do (besides the mere fact that "girl" is in my store name, :) )

Hi Ron,

Not sure, I just got the news this week.

I did not get details.

I was just happy that it is a local and family owned business.

Suggestion: put a big sign on that rack that says "poor little rich guy".

Hello,

Yes! It is Bowl & Board!

I am thrilled to see that our landlord picked another locally owned business to join the building.

I second this. I had no idea, and also felt a little self conscious going through the front door given the store's name.

Also, there are no eccentric clothing stores in the city catering to men without enormous paychecks! Argh!

Honestly, part of the problem is that the men's items are hard to get a hold of.

The store is mostly consigned items, so women are bringing in their items...men, not so much.

From Cambridge Chronicle blog, May 27, 2008:

Bowl and Board on Mass. Ave. is moving… somewhere else

Indeed, this is what I've heard from a number of consignment store owners that I've lodged this complaint with.

Still, I do think the demand would be there if an enterprising clothing retailer found a way to stock some eccentric men's stuff that did not not cost too much money. Just to put that out there. As a guy I have to say: clothes shopping in Boston is a very frustrating and unrewarding experience.

I commend your efforts, by the way. I didn't mean to disparage.

I should add:

If you like vintage, one of the BEST vintage/ eccentric stores in Boston is 90% geared towards men...Bobby's of Boston in the South End.

He does an exceptional job...some great things.

When you say "eccentric" do you mean in an alternative sort of way?

If so, I have heard good things about "Horror Business" in Allston.

*Yawn*

Not that I don't like that store (I have bought several things there and I'm definitely glad to have the local alternative to Ikea/Crate & Barrel) but I think maybe we need some better programs to encourage entrepreneurs to occupy these spaces with completely *new* businesses rather than businesses I can already patronize a mere two train stops away. Boston already has an exceptionally small number of commercial storefront properties (compared to, say, New York City). It seems a shame to have so many of the same thing in one general area when I feel like unexplored concepts are going unexplored because they can't afford the rent.

Heh, this (http://horrorbusiness.biz/guys.html) broken link does not bode well for the hunt.

Still, thanks for the reference! I'll have to check these guys out...

The Mass. Ave. store is moving to Davis, so it's not a matter of duplication.

But see above -- store is leaving Putnam Square for Davis. Which is the same thing McIntyre & Moore did, a decade earlier.

Ah OK. I wasn't clear on that. My rant still stands of course, it just doesn't apply to this case. ;-)
