Anyone else see the sign up in Soleil? They're closed for now until they open under new management, which is a former pastry chef from Modern Pastry. I don't think they included a re-opening date, but I saw it on my way home from work, so I was pretty drunk.

If this means I can get a decent coffee in Teele before 10am and after 3pm, that's great news.

I hope the new people will open it on Sundays. Renee's can get pretty crowded.

Honestly that place's hours are the single most annoying thing about it AND the reason I've been to it only one time instead of dozens in the year that I've lived in Teele Square.

Also, I think maybe I'll go in there when they open under new management and encourage the new owner to join this here community. :-)

I hate that they are never ever open when I want to go. I was told they do a bulk of their income through catering so maybe thats why they dont need to be open at all hours for us coffee drinkers.

Thanks for the post, we're about to be moving out that way!

Yeah, I wondered about that. Literally the last time I saw it open was nearly a year ago.

Well, obviously that catering money wasn't enough to stay open. Either that or they finally realized that having a storefront was pointless.

Its definitely been open in recent months and even a few weeks ago I believe. It just happens to be open when I am driving by at an odd hour and cant stop. I hope whoever manages next will have it open on weekends it would be awesome to walk down the street to get a muffin and coffee in the mornings. Especially since the coffee place next to the chinese takeout place that caught fire last year never reopened.

yeah, that was my impression on the hours too. Bulk of business was catering, and I wouldn't be surprised if your thinking that storefront was pointless is right on.

Magnificent Muffin and Bagels did the trick for my coffee fix. They reintroduced me to the wonders of hazelnut coffee. *such a thrill to write something like this amongst potential swarms of coffee snobs*

That place is never open. Perhaps the new management will actually open a cafe that intends to serve coffee to people ad reallllly odd times, like say, morning.

Obligatorily, I will veto your coffee but the muffins are AWESOME!

I heard it was a falling out with the owners. And yes, they did lots of catering, very good from what I heard.

I love the Magnificent for their bagels - they're my favorite in the whole Boston area. Lucky me, they're just a few steps from work! :)

I saw a sign on their door a month or so ago saying they wouldn't be open most Saturdays from now on because of their heavy catering schedule.

I walked past that place every day, twice a day, for three years, and it's been open maaaayyyybe five or six times. I went in once, and had a sandwich, but it was coincidentally the day the power went out for all of Davis and Teele, so they kicked me out anyway.

Alas. Soleil Cafe is so good in THEORY.

Indeed, good in theory. They weren't open for morning coffees, weren't open for Sunday brunch rush, and, since mid-May if my memory of the previous sign serves, were no longer open on Saturdays at all. Saturdays were the only days I ever could manage to give them my money in exchange for coffee--I'd run back up the hill to Soleil after my laundry started at Kirkland and sip my way through a few dryer runs.

I figured the "closed on Saturdays" bit would be the prelude to "closed." But the new signs posted amidst the newspapering mention two new chefs by name (one formerly of Modern Pastry, IIRC) and run down a list of delicacies including marzipan fruits. My crossed fingers: let me show you them.

My friend had her wedding food catered by them and it was delicious. I guess you cant really be a coffee/sandwich place AND have a busy catering buisness?

I guess Magnificent is a small local chain, because there's a place with the same name next to the West Medford train stop. Any others?

For their first several months, they were open Sundays and evenings, but no one came in, so they changed their hours. And yeah, the cafe was a side project from the catering. I know the owner was looking to sell earlier this year.

I was hoping that the Holland St Cafe would pick up Cafe Soleil's slack, but alas now. I went into the Holland place and bought a brownie and chatted with one of the workers there, his mom made the brownies so I had to buy one. He talked all about how they are going to open all the time and compete with Mag Muffin for quick breakfasts, and then be an ice cream shop/coffee shop during the day, sounded great to me but they are NEVER open. I have think it's a front because I don't understand what is going on there because it's like they aren't even trying.

Their catering left something to be desired

My kids go to a school that Soleil catered and it wasn't a huge favorite with either the kids or the parents so the contract was cancelled. Don't know if that had anything to do with it, but....

I know the owner, and I think the catering money was finally enough NOT to stay open. Though I miss it a lot--back when it was open for dinnertime and we lived nearer to Teele it was a favorite spot.

He catered my wedding shower, and it was amazing food, almost better than our wedding.
