A new restaurant called The Green Tomato will open at the former Boloco on Friday, August 1. (Thanks to Steve Bagley for noting this in the Somerville Journal blog.)

This will be the second location of a restaurant now located in Reading. The Reading one is open only on weekdays, but the owner e-mailed to tell me that the Somerville location will be open 7 am to 8 pm, seven days a week.

Their menu is online. They will be serving breakfast!

Thank you for the information! I don't spend a ton of time in Davis, but when I'm there, the boy and I are always looking for new places to get breakfast. And lunch. And pretty much anywhere that will take our money and give us prepared meals in return, really. =)

I've been several times to the Reading one ... a little slip of a thing near the RR station. Great vegetarian options there and willing to modify orders based on customers' preferences.

Ooh, nice. Seems like a bit different offering then most of the other restaurants around. I will have to check it out.

Hey, something that sounds different from the other places in Davis! Nice! I like this idea.

but where am i going to get a burrito now?! oh wait...

Seems promising, but 8pm is kind of a strange time to close, yes?

i wish that it were open a little later but i am happy that the boloco replacement will have some vegetarian options. that was a big plus for us with boloco. their breakfast will be a good addition to the neighborhood. maybe they will even keep the free wifi tradition? one can hope.

That sounds pretty yummy, especially the salads.

If they still have free wifi I will def give it a try. The salads seem a bit pricey, but then maybe I just don't have a realistic frame of reference, and they do look pretty yummy. Breakfast is a major plus as well. I already miss Boloco (had some work to do and was hungry for something breakfasty and.. D'oh!), but this could be a decent replacement.

It looks like their big target market is takeout, which I read as "busy families", for whom an 8pm close is reasonable. Plus which, if they're open for breakfast, it'd be an awfully long day if they did late dinners too.

I'm assuming the people who show up at 6am to open for breakfast won't be working until closing anyhow. Just saying, with an 8pm close I'll probably never go there for dinner, and the location is too inconvenient to go to for lunch or breakfast very often.

True, but if you're not in their target market, and they think they can make it financially from their target market, they'll be fine with 8pm. Me, it is almost impossible to imagine a circumstance where I would still be eating dinner at 8pm.

funny, because if my husband and i ever get take out, it's because we haven't made dinner yet and it's after 8 PM.

I'll add that I wish they were open a bit later. Even 9 would be good.

And I like the fact that they're called Green Tomato, but the have a big picture of an artichoke on their website. :D

Hm, I was thinking of "dinner at a time such at kids could eat it".

Maybe I'm overly optimistic, but I imagine that if evening business is good for them, they wouldn't hesitate to change their hours and stay open later.

Whereas I can't imagine a circumstance where my fiance and I would eat dinner before 8pm (sometimes he doesn't even get home from work til 8!)...at least, not one that doesn't involved being jetlagged in some way.

Kids?

I thought single people were more likely to eat out than people with kids.

Thus the crucial difference between "eating out", and "takeout" :).

NO! I went to the Harvard Square one the other day and was so excited.. got french fries and there was a single, long hair cooked INTO the french fry.

Ewwww. Never again.

Yikes!!!! Ive been to the Harvard one a bunch of times, and always get the fries, but have yet to spot a hair. I'll have to be careful next time I go.

good point. we don't have kids :)
however, i guess you could say it also depends on the age of the child, and whether they have evening activities etc.
i think closing at 9 would be better, personally...

i'd wager you're in the minority there, actually. i feel like the target market for any place in the greater boston area is either a.) college kids or b.) people who work and use public transportation [i work 9-6 which means i don't even get home until 7pm]

This is good news. Their menu looks fantastic; veggie-friendly, ok prices, and yay, not a burrito to be found! I was hoping that something non-food-related would move in that space, but this menu looks like a nice offering.

"Life is Good" is a retail clothing store with an outlet in Back Bay. Similar style, but I don't think they are connected.

But sign up to the b.good "Family List" and get a free burger on your birthday.

Am I missing something, or does their menu look a lot like standard diner fare, plus pasta? Not that there's anything wrong with that; in fact, I like diner fare, and would like to get it around here somewhere other than Rosebud (ditto cheap pasta that isn't Mike's).

Well, anyone who puts an artichoke on the front page is worth trying in my world... but I'm an artichoke fanatic.

That sounds about a thousand times more interesting than Boloco. I might actually go out of my way to eat there (they have quiche!). I do hope they decide to stay open later. I'm also curious about their catering and whether that will also be an option in Somerville (my office orders catered food for events a lot and we're always looking for new places to try).

I like b.good, but I have to say that their veggie burger options aren't very tasty. :(

I hope that they're able to stick around for a bit. I'm beginning to think that space is doomed.

I'll admit that I've never tried them. I'm too obsessed with the Carolina Burger.
