[identity profile] nvidia99999.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] davis_square
I've seen a few scattered posts about this topic. I thought it might be useful to have a consolidation thread about failed business in the area. It gives an idea of how well the neighborhood is doing, financially. If you know of businesses that have gone down, please post the information/links here.

Boloco, O'Naturals, La Contessa, La Spina (was behind the Rosebud diner). I can't think of many others. Cibeline is not failing; it's successful enough that it's moving to Beacon Hill.

Mcintyre and Moore? "Failed" in that they couldn't sustain their rent in the area.

I know on Teele Rainbow Carpet and some cell phone shop have both departed, and a local insurance agency is moving.

How long a period are you talking about?

I don't know if Antonia's "failed" or if it just closed. Those aren't necessarily the same thing.

The closing of a cell phone shop can only be good news for that (or any other) neighborhood.

Ah, good point. I guess I get so used to restaurants tanking in Davis that I assumed it. :)

In general, Davis looks pretty prosperous to me. Empty storefronts don't stay empty very long these days.

Dollar Days.

I think the other question is what has failed and what storefronts are still empty.

A lot of the things that have been mentioned have been failed, but new businesses fill in the void pretty quickly.

This is less true in Ball Square, for example.

Well, it's pretty prime real estate: huge digs, very visible on the intersection, etc. It's been empty for a while.

Currently empty: La Spina (unless Rosebud has expanded into it?), Antonia's.

Soon to be empty: Cibeline

Soon to be NOT empty: Dollar Days (Blue Shirt is expanding into it)

That's it, as far as I know.

It wasn't airplane noise, it was the plans to put an orange news ticker above Middlesex Savings.

Disc Diggers

2 chains:
West Coast Video
Buck-a-Book (don't know if they still have stores but,
they closed all locations in MA)

The whole Buck-a-Book chain went under. As did the West Coast Video chain; the local store survived the demise of its parent chain by a few years, keeping the old name.

nearer to teele: there is a littel restaurant out of business. did it use to sell ice cream? i don't remember.

not exactly a storefront but still valid: the theater space on elm is still vacant, right?

No, cultural misappropriation sucked its blood dry.

From what I've read, the landlords of the ex-Jimmy Tingle theatre received a license to reopen it themselves. But I haven't seen any advertising or announcements for any new shows there.

If we're going to keep going back, let's not forget Carberry's, Bertucci's, Fusion Express, China Sun (if only we could get rid of Golden Light too), Nick's Roast Beef, Buck-a-Book, Disc Diggers (that one made me sad), ...

But my read is that the poster was looking for current information.
