Stolen Lemond Road Bike

Someone stole my 2003 silver and orange Lemond Arch D'Huez last Wednesday. I had it locked at the bike racks near the MBTA station on College ave. Any info on finding my baby would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is this bike registered with the National Bike Registry (http://www.nationalbikeregistry.com/) and/or do you have the serial number for the bike? The problem is that just in the last week I've seen at least three different people riding around Somerville or Cambridge on yellow and silver Lemond bicycles.

Also just for the sake of helping others avoid a similar fate, can you tell us exactly how your bike was locked (i.e. what sort of lock you used and how you used it) and what time of day it was stolen? That area around the Davis Square train station has been quite a target for bike thieves. I'm a strong advocate of the idea that the MBTA should at the very least train some cameras with video recorders on those racks.

Three people, eh? My baby was in rough shape, scratches and a few rusty cable ends. I'm sure if I took a few days off work and hung around I'd eventually find it. I'm learning to let go.

I didn't register it, or recall the serial #. The lock was a combination lock builtin to a twisty cable from the 90s. It got copped somewhere between 8AM to 6PM. I called the MBTA and asked about cameras, the guy was no help at all.

I'm sorry you lost your bike. For the next bike, you should invest in a nice U-lock. Hang around the Davis Sq. bike racks long enough and you'll see sketchy dudes walking around with long paper bags- inside the bags are bolt-cutters, and a sharpened bolt-cutter can cut right through a cable lock. U-locks aren't perfect, but the goal is to make your bike a little bit harder to steal than the ones around it so that thieves will go for the easier target.

Again, sorry your bike was stolen. I've had two stolen (both because of personal idiocy on my part in choosing bad locks or places to lock- never had a bike that was securely locked with a quality U-lock) and I know how much it sucks.

Can the police arrest, or at least harrass, people who walk around carrying bolt-cutters? I did not realize this was common.

Thanks man. Yea, I used to park it a little more obscurely. I figured the really public view of those racks would be safer.

The bike lock to bike value ratio was just a no brainer. I'm an idiot.

Time to build up a better road bike for the winter, I guess. :)

Well I'm from the South and we like to exaggerate! I don't know that it's common enough that you'd see it every day, but anecdotal evidence from myself and bike shop employees I've talked to is that we've seen it a few times personally.

I wouldn't think so - carrying bolt cutters itself isn't a crime, though it may be indicative of intent. I'm no lawyer, though.

I thought there was a criminal offense of carrying or possessing "burglarious tools". Though I'm not sure how the police can distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate carriage of such tools.
