I'm starting a new job on Monday - in fact that would be my first job ever, and I wanted to do a more "professional" look - after years in grad school:). This would be the second time I cut my hair in the US, so I have basically zero experience. First and last time here I went to Salon CU and saw Summer for highlights/hair cut. It was OK but I wasn't really thrilled (maybe because she didn't really talk to me much so I felt kind of awkward). Also, it was rather expensive (I think I ended up paying 100 with tip)... So, I'm looking again for a place to just cut my hair - and maybe style it a bit for a reasonable amount of money where they wouldn't screw it up. I have mid-back long hair and probably would want to make it about shoulder-long or a bit longer.
Thanks so much and sorry if that's been asked here before (I did look at the "hair" posts though).

I don't get my hair cut ever, but many people I am close to swear by Dana at M, a salon on Mass Ave near Porter Square.

I go to Dana (your friends who swear by him may have curly hair? he's the only reasonably priced person who begins to understand curly hair, which makes him almost the Messiah). $45 plus tip (which I, as a curly-haired person, consider reasonable, though if you have been able to find people who know what to do with you at Supercuts, you may not).

DHR Stylists in Harvard Square is awesome and very reasonably priced. I love the way Dale does my hair, which is between shoulder blades and mid back.

I'm still looking for someone who understands wavy hair (and the people who refuse to blow-dry it straight) does he do that?

and also, do you play uke?

Not having wavy hair myself, I couldn't say, though I'm sure he's sympathetic to your refusal to dry it straight; he's never tried to straighten my curly hair, or suggested that I do.

I don't play ;). Back when I was thinking of an LJ name all the ones I initially wanted were taken, so I started thinking of completely random words until I got something that wasn't taken yet. (I do *have* a ukelele, but it's a total coincidence. I suppose I can plunk out a few easy tunes if you put a gun to my head and lower your standards.)

Josh at Judy Jetson's (on Mass Ave near Porter) cuts my hair. He's good with heavy, straight hair. $45 plus tip.

The texture of your hair and your styling preferences probably matter more than the length if you're choosing a stylist, so I'd start asking around based on that. Find someone whose hairstyle you like and who has similar hair to yours and ask them where they go and what they ask the stylist to do.

I have hair past my shoulders that's wavy but not thick, and I sometimes wear it straight. I really like Danielle at Judy Jetson. She knows what's she's doing, is responsive to questions and requests, and always asks how I've been wearing my hair lately and then uses that to figure out how to cut it.

Anyone know where you can get it done for free? A styling school who needs volunteers?

Or anyone know anyone who is practicing for their license and needs a chump?

I am broker than broke, and can't even afford $1, but am in desperate need of a trim, three inches or so. Any ideas?

Good hair stylists

I've been seeing my hairdresser, Mirian, for about 6 years and have never once been disappointed (as I was after seeing a number of expensive Newbury Street stylists. She was at Le Pli (salon at The Charles Hotel) up until about a year ago when she and another great stylist there (Natalie) opened up great salon in Huron Village. It's called The Salon @ Huron Village and I even love the atmosphere. Everyone seems to be happy to be there. Miriam will give you great advice, but is not pushy and really listens. I think the price for a cut is $60 (I always have color done as well so forget the exact price).

Highly recommended.

My wife has hair like that. We both go to Mario's Salon and are happy there.
