Hi - where in the Somerville/Cambridge area can I go to buy wall art?  Can anyone recommend any specific galleries/shops?  I'd prefer to buy original art by a local artist.  Thanks!

shamless plug, shameless plug ^____^

You should come to Magpie (http://magpie-store.com), on Highland Ave because it is awesome and has plenty of splendid art by local artists!

If you can wait until next May, Somerville Open Studios provides many opportunities to buy art from local artists.

Heh. If you're interested in nature photography, I have a series (mostly butterflies) I've taken that I sell prints from. :)

Lots of great places, but I had good success at out of the blue gallery on prospect st, across from the bread and circus food store (unless it's now called whole foods?)

Two artist coops in Cambridge are Sign of the Dove (signofthedoveco-op.com), with a year-round store in Porter Square and a holiday season store in Harvard Square, and Cambridge Artists Coop (http://www.cambridgeartistscoop.com/) with a year-round store in Harvard Square.

It's in Arlington, but 13 Forest Gallery (http://13forest.com/index.shtml) on Mass Ave is a terrific local business featuring loads of local art. Marc (the owner) is wonderful; I definitely recommend shopping here.

Just hop the 77 up Mass Ave--the gallery is down the street from the Capitol Theater. Easy, easy commute from Cambridge/Somerville.

A second vote for 13 forest -- I bought a print by David Colombo (http://www.davidcolombo.com/) there, and the current show has a really wide variety of local artists. For wall art, there's lots of painting and photography, but there's also pottery, jewelry, notecards, etc.

The Cambridge Center for Adult Education's Holly Fair is December 13-14 at 42 Brattle St. and 56 Brattle St. in Harvard Square. There may be some wall art for sale.

Blue Cloud Gallery in Ball Square. All local artists and works range from wall art to jewelry. I have a really cool wall hanging that I got a few years ago on the wall in my office.

http://www.cambridgeart.org has shows going most of the time at 2 galleries: Their main space is at 25 Lowell St across from Mt Auburn hospital. The other is in the lobby of the University Place building at 124 Mt. Auburn St. in Harvard Square.

There's also a craft fair at Precinct in Union Sq next Sat 11-4.

Some of the cafes & restaurants have work by local folks for sale: Christopher's in Porter Sq, Diesel cafe in Davis, Bloc 11 in Union Sq.

Or (another shameless plug) check my website:

etsy.com has a fun shop local feature, though I don't know how much wall art there might be (as opposed to, e.g., jewelry) -- but I did buy some marbled paper from there that I will be using as wall art.
