If so, you can send your receipts to Hull Seaside Animal Rescue and Shaw's will donate 1% of the total to their shelter.

Even if you don't, do click on the link! The 2009 Kittendales calendar is ready, and it's Buff Meets Fluff!

Jesus, I love that calendar! But I fear it would be a little too "Undersexed Cat Lady" of me to actually buy it...

Where in Davis Square is there a Shaw's?

I know there's one in Porter, but even though they're close this seems like a fairly unrelated post to me, and doubly so since it's about a kitten calendar put out by an agency in Hull.

OMG, I wish my rescue thought of this calendar, it's BRILLIANT. Talk about knowing your demographic, lol.

I humbly request that you leave these determinations up to the moderators to handle in the background. Please? It is tiresome to see posts cluttered by these queries. It also wears down the civility of the community, and makes people with helpful things to post less inclined to do so for fear of being accosted with these questions. Posts are still relatively few, and the unrelated are ever fewer, so I would be very pleased if you could stop policing...many thanks for considering it.

As a moderator, I'd say the post is relevant and on-topic. Shaw's is a 10-minute walk from Davis Square, and is probably the supermarket that a majority of Davis Square residents shop at.

You hate willow trees AND kittens. :(

Fair enough.

I don't see how an animal shelter in another town that a multi-state supermarket chain is donating money to is relevant in davis_square -- that's not the same as hating kittens. And I don't think that a vocal minority should get to dictate how private landowners should act -- that's not the same as hating willow trees.

But, I also don't want to drive people off, and can see how asking about relevance is off-putting.

I *was* being facetious.

So if Shaws were donating to, say, undernourished children in war torn countries, we couldn't be allowed to talk about it in davis_square either? Those countries are nowhere near Davis Square, afterall. Really? Regardless of the fact that I'm willing to bet money that most of the residents of Davis Square shop at said Shaws, especially if they lack a car?

Honestly? The "not relevant!", "illegal!" is getting a little tiresome. Especially since as a Davis Square resident - which you are not, by the way - this post felt incredibly relevant to me. It made me go look for my recent recepits to see if they qualify.

Asking whether a post is relevant - and hearing arguments for why it may or may not be - seems like it strengthens the discussion, especially when it's tangential. A post about helping kids far away might be a great one to have, but if it isn't related to davis_square, it's probably better for helping_undernourished_children, in my opinion. That said, I'm not a moderator and am fine posting fewer questions about why seemingly random posts are here.

Thankfully, relevancy of posts to this community seems to be fairly fluid in its definition. That does mean that people have the right to ask questions about what that definition should mean. Not sure what your comment about my residency status has to do with anything, but I'm a bit surprised by it. I live in Union Square; if there is now a residency requirement in order to discuss the content of what is posted here, perhaps that should be more widely announced.

Your residency is only relevant in so far as your reaction to the Porter Square Shaws being discussed in the post. You seemed to think that it would be perfectly irrelevant to davis_square users when, I can assure you, most people who live in Davis use that Shaws for their general grocery shopping.

Therefore, knowing that a store they shop at is having some kind of charity benefit (and never mind WHO it benefits and where, that was my point) might be helpful. Ergo, it's relevant.

Sure, questioning everything fosters discussion. It also fosters frustration. Leave the modding to the mods.

I agree that this post is relevant (I'm puzzled that someone would think it's not).

Separately, I don't think that asking why a post is relevant, or stating an opinion about it, needs to be limited to mods.

I do, too. That Shaw's/Star Market is part of Davis for many of us, and I don't think your post is off-topic in the slightest.

Yes, as much as I sometimes complain about Star's lack of variety, it's my primary supermarket and the only full-sized supermarket walkable to me. I have a car-owning boyfriend who sometimes drives me to Stop & Shop for big shopping trips, but when I'm on my own it's Star for me and my granny cart.

While I don't live in Davis Square, I do live rather close to it (20 minute walk) and spend a lot of my precious free time there. I'm also new to the area and always looking for info on the area. And I do most of my shopping at the Shaw's in Medford and plan on sending all further receipts to this shelter. So thanks for the tip, Redcolumbine!

Is this going on indefinitely? Or is it a time-limited deal? The website doesn't say.

Sorry, I meant the Shaws receipt business.
