I thought [livejournal.com profile] somerville311 would post here, but s/he hasn't, so ...

SNOW EMERGENCY DECLARED for FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19 at 7am.
NO SCHOOL TOMORROW

The City of Somerville has declared a snow emergency to go into effect at 7 a.m., Friday, December 19, 2008. THERE WILL BE NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY.

During snow emergencies, parking is allowed on the odd-numbered side of the street only (unless otherwise posted). Cars not moved from the even side of the street by 11 a.m. on Friday will be subject to ticketing and towing. Beginning Thursday night at 8:00 p.m., residents unable to find a parking space on the odd-numbered side of the street may park in any municipal or school parking lot for the duration of the emergency.

(I don't know why the page has the date "February 21, 2008" on it.)

Edit: Fixed now. Date of snow emergency also fixed now.

I'm looking for a similar announcement on Cambridge's web site, but I can't find one.

School's cancelled already? This will guarantee the snow won't start until about four o'clock.

I suppose it *is* better to err on the side of safety. The Trickettes will be delighted.

Now for the DPW to pull off a bang-up job clearing streets etc., so this and Sunday's projected snow doesn't snowball right into Christmas vacation...

Copied from the website:
"The City of Somerville has declared a snow emergency to go into effect at 7 a.m., Friday, Deceber 19, 2008. THERE WILL BE NO SCHOOL ON FRIDAY."

Maybe they shouldn't cancel school, if the kids spell and proofread like the person who updated the website. ;)

Maybe I should go back to school tomorrow.

December is missing its m. :-) Took me more than a few seconds to find it.

I see a typo on December...it's spelled Deceber. Don't see any other mistakes.
I do, however, see a mistake in what Ron took from the Somerville Website....it says the snow emergency will begin at 7am on Friday, December 18...tomorrow is the 19th.

And I'm assuming snow emergency parking regs take precedence over street sweeping regs, since tomorrow on my street we're supposed to park on the even side for street sweeping.

Gosh, so the 20 fucking text messages they sent my cell phone last week are now moot?

I do appreciate the info, Ron.

This is actually related to the snow shoveling email from earlier today, but I'm hoping people who need to see this information will see it here..

The city website says that tickets for not shoveling/de-icing are $25. However, this was changed at the end of last winter and the website is yet to be updated.*

First ticket is now $50, second ticket is $100, and subsequent tickets are $150.

* this is according to the Superintendent of Inspectional Services Division

Well, that's good to know. I checked Boston.com, and Boston hasn't declared a snow emergency yet. Is that the place to look? I'd like to know if my workplace will be closed tomorrow.

Never fear, it's Wednesday's projected snow that will interfere with Christmas vacation. (Yes, I know, it's too far out to tell, but there is a system being tracked that's currently projected to get here around Wednesday.)

You should also check that your workplace cares about whether there's a snow emergency. I stayed home from my job once because there was a hurricane and a statewide state of emergency and they were telling everyone to stay home, but my manager informed me afterward that that didn't count, because the bank (where I worked) wasn't closed.

Sadly, my team has a bunch of deadlines for tomorrow, and the people in our Arizona office are already annoyed at us for being behind. I talked to my boss, but since I can't work on this project from home, I'll be going in tomorrow unless there's a snow emergency and the building closes. (Then I'll be going in Saturday.)

I'd grouch, but I'm happy to have a job that pays well right now!

Yup, since everyone at my work can work from home, doesn't matter if it's a snow day, still have to work.

Wednesday off I could handle (it's a half-day, anyhow). I'm thinking back a couple of years, when school wound up getting cancelled for *an entire week* due to snowstorms Sunday and Wednesday, plus some all-around general incompetence on the part of whoever's responsible for clearing snow.

I remember thinking when school was called off for Thursday (which happened Wednesday afternoon) that there was about a .00001 per chance that schools would be open Friday. If there's no school Monday, look out.

Any word on how often one could get ticketed? Once per measureable snowfall, or is someone going to come by every day and fundraise until the snow melts?

I know I saw a Boston snow emergency announcement on Boston.com earlier today. Right now the clearest statement to that effect I can find is this article:
http://www.cityofboston.gov/news/?id=4067

It's linked on boston.com under the "Parking Bans | City" link, but it's certainly not the large headline I saw there earlier today.

Thank you very much!

Sorry, forgot to mention that.
It is once every 24 hours.
However, unlike parking tickets, this isn't something that is actively ticketed. You are only ticketed if someone complains, or if the infraction is especially grievous ... though that isn't Somerville policy, that is just my understanding through past experience.

Have you tried looking out the window? If your doors and windows are all closed, the mounds of snow probably haven't forced their way inside just yet, but there's plenty outside.
