I've heard 'Villens get pissy over being called Townies, because Charlestown natives tend to call themselves that, and THEY can get pissy over appropriation of terms.
It is, usually, a generic term, and I seem to remember the Tufts kids using it to denigrate the Medford and Somerville residents who came to gawk at the Tufties being idiots and whining about being seen being idiots ... to which some locals responded that townies wouldn't have come over to see them.
