A friend is visiting me this weekend (arriving today and leaving sunday). He's in a 16' box truck. I called 311 and the parking office told me my best bet would be parking in a municipal lot and I'd only have to feed the meter saturday. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Does anyone know which municipal lot would be best (nearest to broadway and central)?

I'm surprised they'd suggest that, since staying at a meter and feeding it all day is technically not legal. The meter's purpose is to encourage turnover.

The metered lot spaces aren't time-limited--you can feed the meters there with impunity.

It's the metered street spaces that are time-limited.

The closest one I can think of to that location would be behind the CVS at Broadway & Medford.

You can't use a visitor parking pass for this? The parking brochure (http://www.somervillema.gov/CoS_Content/documents/ParkingBrochure12-2008.pdf) does not seem to care about the type of vehicle using a visitor pass. And even if you've already used it once during the week they will only be checking on Saturday.

There is non-permit parking in Davis Sq. Just park out on one of those streets.

with the mounds of snow and cars parked on both sides, making the through-way more narrow, there is the risk of the truck getting stuck in the middle of the street or accidentally swiping a parked car.

I can verify that trying to use a visitor's pass on a moving van will get your friend ticketed. I was unaware of the "No commercial vehicles overnight" restriction and my friend got tagged.

There's a lot near me that is municipal owned and completely free. It's on central st. Between medford and highland. Sometimes verizon trucks park there...sometimes somerville cops sit there...mostly it's just empty.

If my memory is correct the City bought that lot from Verizon to help with the Community Path extension- but I think they lease the spaces to Verizon. You might be able to get away with parking there but I am not at all sure its legal to do so.
