#1- I was just at Harvard Sq and they are selling Girl Scout cookies at a table outside the Coop across from Out of Town News.

#2- I believe there are 2 versions of the new movie "Coraline" out- 1 in 3D and the other, not in 3D. Does anyone know where the 3D version is showing? By the way, excellent flick, but probably not suited for wee ones. And in 2D it is still an amazing movie.

I want to see it, too. Wonder how many other folks reading this want to as well. I've been thinking I might catch the 9:40pm Tuesday night at the theater near Park Street, and I was debating posting about it in lj; maybe I should post here in DS ljland and invite folks to join me, though I don't know how many folk could make that time--however I would assume that at the least it would not be too crowded at that time to bring a mob...will think on it:)

Saw it (Coraline 3D) Saturday at the AMC theater on Boston Common. I loved it to death. Let me suggest that you show up at least 25-30 minutes ahead of time to make sure you get a good seat. The 3D is definitely better when sitting in the middle of the auditorium.

The other reason to see it in 3D is that it basically guarantees you'll be seeing it projected by a digital projector. The film was shot in digital so this should improve the picture quality by some amount. I can personally say that the picture at the AMC was very crisp, but I wish I could have seen it on a larger screen (ArcLight Theater Los Angeles, anyone?) It's too bad Boston has pretty much closed all of its really large screen theaters. Le sigh.

^ Yeah, I told my hubby NOT to mention the movie to our almost 5yo, who saw the trailer a few months ago and was briefly obsessed with it :-/

Anyone read Ty Burr's review? I loved that he wrote, "Good news for family psychiatrists across the land: "Coraline" is opening today, which means on Monday they'll have a whole new clientele of traumatized young children whose parents saw the PG rating and thought this was the latest "Kung Fu Panda."

Heh, Gaiman's actually of the opinion that the movie (like the book) will generally be far scarier for grown-ups than youngsters.

really? I asked him whether he thought the movie would be okay for my 5-year-old who couldn't get through Wizard of Oz, and he said no. He did say that it could be fine for some 5-6-year-olds though. Obviously, as with everything else in parenting, it comes down to knowing your particular child, and then using some common sense.

Maybe Gaiman meant it would be scarier because parents would then have to spend days/weeks/months/years dealing with kids who are totally freaked out and afraid mom/dad will turn into the "others".

That's pretty good advice for most movies. Especially with digital sound, you get the sweetest sound closest to the center. I prefer center between half and 2/3rds of the way back.

There are always scores of rude losers talking during the movies. One day, somebody is going to be punched in the nose by somebody else there.

Sadly, such rudeness is pretty common in most "shoebox" theaters. Gawd, I can remember years ago when the Clint Eastwood movie came out (In the Line of Duty, or something like that) and John Malkovich played a man stalking the president. There was this old couple in front of me discussing every fucking minute detail of the movie in loud voices, even though everyone was shushing them. Finally, there was this scene where Malkovich made a brief appearance in the background and the old man asked his wife "was that him?" and I totally lost it and yelled at him "no, you dumb fuck, it was fucking Santa Claus."

Nary a peep out of them the rest of the movie.

But I'd be afraid to say anything to most of the punks in the movies, just because they might pull out a gun and shoot me for having the nerve to interrupt their phone call with their peeps.
