I'm hoping against hope that there is another explanation and they have not closed. The owner / chef has a real passion for food that was quite evident in everything I had from there.
Aw, this is too bad... however I think the owners of Soleil Cafe had much more baking skill than business sense. The place was always confused about whether it was a bakery, a coffee house, or a restaurant. The baked goods were fabulous but expensive, the food menu was too limited (and, as I understand it, recently became more limited), and the hours were always funny. Had I been advising them, I would have suggested making it pretty much just a bakery and sticking to traditional bakery hours (i.e.- open early but not necessarily stay open late).
At yesterday's Davis Square Task Force meeting, Alderman Bob Trane sadly confirmed that Cafe Soleil has closed. He was hopeful that the business could be sold to someone else who would reopen it.
Oh NOOOOOOOO! I work right nearby and enjoyed a "cookie lunch" there at least once a week! (their food menu didn't excite me and I bring my lunch, but their sweets were TO DIE FOR). Oh this is sad. The baker is seriously talented.
