there is no serge /sew combo.. the mechanics are really different. You can however use a zigzag/or some of the decorative stitches to work out.
You can look at the singer store in Davis for a good used machine... this is a pretty good deal... esp since most "cheap or free machines" need to be fixed/adjusted/ cleaned.
The serger I use is the brother 1040D from walmart/amazon which is uber cheap (@230- when sergers start at 400) and it generally behaves, once you learn how to use them. -- it has very limited features.
