Give the Gift of Somerville

Now you can share Somerville with your friends on Facebook using Give the Gift of Somerville, a new gift application developed by Somerville resident Dev Purkayastha and myself. You can use the app to send Somerville landmarks and icons, from a bathtub Mary, to the Round House, to a parking ticket, and many more to your friends all over the world.

The purpose of the application will be to raise money for a Somerville non-profit, most likely CAAS or the Somerville Homeless Coalition, by inviting local businesses to be added to it in exchange for a donation to the chosen non-profit. I'm still in the planning stages of the financial part, but the application is available for immediate use, with new gift items to be added in the coming weeks.

If I wanted to use this to send someone, say, a ticket to a show at the Somerville Theatre, or at Johnny D's, how would I do this?

Click on the link in the above entry. This will take you to the application. You may be asked if you wish to allow the app to access your information. Click allow. You will see some gift items to choose from. If you don't see a parking ticket, it just means that you haven't unlocked that item yet. The more gifts you send, the more items you unlock. So choose from what you're offered initially, and choose the friends you want to send it to. Each time you do so, you'll unlock another gift. Have fun! L.

1) Sign up for a Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/) account, or log into Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/).
2) Click the Give the Gift of Somerville (http://apps.facebook.com/somerville-dgajab/&link=dashboard) link.
3) When it asks you to allow access, click "allow".
4) Choose whatever item you want to send, then click on the name of the contact/friend you want to send it to. (It assumes they also have a Facebook account.) Repeat step 4 ad nauseum.

OK, I guess I'm not understaning this, because I thought I this was a way to send someone an item that was being offered for sale at a Somerville business (such as the theatre or JD's)

Part B, number 4 is very important, so I can show businesses that by donating to a local non-profit and being included in the app will be a great way to promote themselves!!

No, no these are virtual gifts, pictures of Somerville landmarks. When business start signing up, there will be pictures of their locations or their wares to send, but it will all still be virtual. In my financial scheme, users pay nothing, but business donate to a non-profit in order to be included. Everybody wins!

I've sent a bunch of gifts with your app., and my friends say they've accepted them. But, the app still says they are "unreceived" so I haven't been able to see other gifts.
