The + appears when you're viewing an image that's larger than your browser window, so your browser automatically scales it down to fit within the window. You can click to toggle between viewing it at its real size (click +) and back to the scaled down view (click -). If the image is small enough to fit in your browser window at its real size, no such toggling is needed, since you're seeing the image as is anyway. You should still be able to scale the image (which will make it larger but also blurry). I think that's cmd-+ on most Mac browsers, and maybe shift-+ on PC browsers, and it should be in one of your menus (on Safari it's "make text larger" in the View menu).
