it's porter, but it's close enough to davis --

http://www.wickedlocal.com/cambridge/news/x2138482128/Japanese-market-owner-Lesley-forced-us-out-of-Cambridge

this is terrible news!
i thought i would just give a heads-up to people here who might not have heard. i frequent kotobukiya about once a month and really can't imagine porter without it.

the article mentions they might be relocating to medford. i guess it beats being completely closed down, but it seems awfully far.

[edit] is there anything we can effectively *DO* about this to make our displeasure known? contact lesley? rally to kotobukiya?

[edit2] if you would like to contact lesley to let them know how you feel about them giving kotobukiya the boot, here is their office of public affairs: http://www.lesley.edu/public_affairs/index.html

I'm sorry Lesley is cramped, but I think they're fools to do this.

Agreed. Plus, their current bookstore is crap; I can see the advantage of trying to get more space, but there are already several other bookstores in the immediate area. I've always been surprised Barnes and Noble attached their name to that store.

(If they want a good bookstore space, they should've taken the space that Citi's in now. I know finances probably dictated otherwise, but it still blows that my favorite Asian grocery in the area is being forced out to a neigborhood I can't even get to by T, let alone by walking.)

Nooooooo!

Are there any other stores like this in Boston? :(

Oh fuck! Just when I'd gotten utterly addicted to bento, and thought, "Gee, I really need to go to Kotobukiya and get some stuff for making Japanese food for my bento!" Damn it. Guess I will have to go before they close and take advantage of any markdowns. I do hope they reopen.

I checked out the website and I have to admit, I've never seen a marketplace that also carried imported videos. It sounds like such an awesome place. Any chance of rioting to change Lesley's mind?

Why do I miss all the cool stuff? :'(

Depending on what you're looking for, you may be able to find most of it at various Super 88 locations or at stores I don't know the names of in Chinatown.

lesley owns my alma mater, and i'm thankful i got out of there in '05 before they started really stuffing their lameo liberal arts speshul snowflake hands in everything like they are now. anyway, 'our' bookstore is also a barnes & noble, the one in kenmore, so maybe that has something to do with it, and they have some kind of deal going on.

Why does Lesley need its own bookstore when Porter Square Books is a block away?

I wish Citibank would go under already. Their presence in Harvard Square, Porter Square, Winter Hill, etc. is a total waste of neighborhood retail space. They also don't seem to have done anything positive for the Wang Center since they (partially?) took it over.

Probably because Porter Square books isn't garaunteed to order all of the textbooks that Lesley needs... I was surprised when B&N started buying college book stores... They have to be run much differently, and much more locally than major chain, or even normal local book stores...
