I'm looking for recomendations for a professional to install central AC in my house.  Anyone have this done and have a recomendation or want to share an experience or cost info?

I used my oil contractor (Cubby Oil). Terrific crew; definitely recommended. But it might depend on the type of system you are installing and the current conditions. For example, are you taking advantage of ducting that already exists? Are you going with a high velocity ducted system? A so-called "ductless" system?

For maintaining our central AC and replacing big parts like the air pump, we've been quite happy with Metropolitan Air in Everett.

I moved into a place where a friend of the owners had installed the central AC, and we had a ton of problems. The air conditioner didn't cool very well, our power bills were high, the AC unit frequently tripped the 50-amp breaker, we could see ice on some of the lines in the summer, etc. The original installer came out four or five times to do warrantee work. He didn't charge us, but he didn't fix the problems either. I forgot the name of the company, but the guy I dealt was Bob, and he was speed-dial #8 on my cell phone because I had to call him so often.

Finally, I called AC Mechanical in Medford (781-391-5959). AC Mechanical came out once and fixed a small leak in the system, topped off the coolant, and installed a hard-start capacitor. They showed up when they said they would, charged me a fair price, and I haven't had any problems in the two years since they came.

In other words, I highly recommend AC Mechanical.

My contractor used Central Heating and Cooling when we did our remodel. We've been very happy with the system they installed. So far, there have been no problems (2 years).
They drew up a plan for running all the ducts and showed it to us before doing anything. We added an extra duct, but besides that their initial plan took into consideration all our needs, and minimized the impact on our attic usability.

I got a quote to do the 2nd floor of my 2-family house (no existing duct work) and it came to $11,000. Did not include finishing carpentry. Best thing to do is to get an estimate, as these things can vary wildly based on the side and construction of your house. My unit in my house, for instance, is very small, (750 sqft, 2-bed), but the layout is wacky, hence the price.

Good luck. hope this helps.

I just had it done by All Phases Mechanical. They gave me a very competitive price and did quality work. The only catch is I had to work a little harder (do my own homework) to make sure I got an energy efficient model that qualified for the federal tax rebate and the state coolsmart program.
