It's very possible to hear gunshots from that distance. When I lived in Reading, PA I lived on the otherside of the city from where the majority of shootings happened & I could hear them all the time & that was usually 2-3 miles away. It depends on how the area is set up - at that time for me I was up on a hill that overlooked the entire city, so I heard it all as it echoed. If there's lots of concrete & buildings there will be echo & even if they didn't hear the actual shot in Davis they may have heard the echo it created.
