Three cars, that I am aware of, had their side view mirrors badly damaged last night. I walked around the neighborhood and talked to some other people who also found this had happened to their cars last night.

I don't know if anyone can do anything preventative about this, but I thought I'd let people know.

This was on the corner of Thorndike and Kingston just off the bike path.

Don't know if it's the street-side mirrors. I lived over on School St and mirrors were a frequent casualty from cars clipping them, and the same goes for most non-main streets in Somerville. I lucked out- someone hit my mirror enough to take a chunk out of the housing but not damage the actual mirror.

... Just curious to know if it was vandalism or a drunk driver.

as far as preventative, if it's the street side, see if your car's mirror can fold in, and if it can, fold it in every time you park. That will at least reduce the likelihood of it getting clipped.
(and it definitely doesn't take a drunk driver to clip mirrors on some of our lovely, totally wide enough streets.)
I learned that the hard way after getting mine smashed multiple times when living up on Main St.

wow! that sux. yeah, it does sound like it must have been done on purpose. lovely.
(FTR, I don't actually even have a car anymore, plus not in that exact area,, just thought I'd share my heard-earned lesson, in case anyone else hadn't thought of it.)

heh. you know, I posted about this (http://community.livejournal.com/davis_square/1634065.html) happening on Linden St. in February, and it became 'online buzz' according to the Globe. Absolutely bizarre, but I'm totally with you (obviously) - people need to report this when it gets done en masse.

omg, yes.

i never had this until i got my current car, and actually didn't know until i was clipped in a parking garage. at first i thought the thing had been snapped off, until i realized it just folded in. MAGIC!

Interesting.

With lots of moving vans in the neighborhood last and this week, we have another possible culprit.

I noticed one car that had its mirror knocked off -- it was the sidewalk side. The detached mirror was on the sidewalk. I didn't happen to notice any others though. This would be on the left side of Thorndike if you are leaving the street/entering the bike path towards Davis. I did a double take because I thought it was strange.

trash day?

By the way, would that be your trash pickup day? I recently had my mirror kindly removed from my car by a trash truck. Not on this street, though. They really tried to deny that it happened even though I saw it myself. Fold your mirrors in, people! This obviously does not help if a person really wants to remove your mirror :(
